AA MD80 IFE To AUS On 12/12

Wed Dec 17, 2003 12:19 pm

As I was preparing to board my CO flight to IAH at ~3:40 pm, I noticed the crash trucks (3 of them) dispatched...I am a firefighter and recognize an IFE when I see it...not to mention I soon got a page that there was an alert II with the AA MD80 running low on fuel landing 17L. My question is...why would an AA MD80 inbound to AUS (I presume not a diversion) be low on fuel...it's not like they are doing transcons or anything...oversight...fueling discrepancy...turbulence? I think AA only flies S80's from LAX, ORD and DFW to AUS...none of those should be significantly weight-restricted to require this kind of emergency...priority in landing due to late?

Your thoughts...and I stand by with a fire extinguisher in case I get flamed...not trying to criticize, just really curious. I know in the USAF, O-4's and up would declare IFE's for priority landing...

Perhaps either incorrect calculations, or there was a stronger than anticipated headwind at altitude that caused the flight to take much longer than originally expected. Maybe it came from an airport where there were long delays on the ground and the engines were kept running as well. Im not sure, just my .02!

After digging into the AA timetable, I think I have it narrowed down to either AA 731 from DFW due at 3:27 pm or AA2041 from ORD due at 3:08 pm...I think there were some probs in ORD that day...sooooo. Anyone have any info?

I would have to guess it came from ORD, very doubtful that you would run low on fuel on the 160-mile trip from DFW.
