SLC!?!? More Passengers Than JNB, KIX, YVR...

Wed Dec 17, 2003 12:56 pm

I was flipping through the Airliner World magazine yesterday, and I was really shocked to see that SLC was busier than many major world airports, like KIX, YVR, and JNB. What is up with that? I figured that cities like that would have busier airports than SLC.

Simple, SLC is a major Delta hub which is one of the largest airlines in the world.

However, cities like KIX, YVR, and JNB have a lot more O&D than SLC does.

So in that sense, SLC is the least significant. Most of the traffic that SLC sees is transiting.

Copa, whats up man? Actually in all the time I spent in YVR, I was very surprised how slow that place is. You have to sit a long time sometimes to see a plane land. Very surprising. Pilots tell me it has its moments, but over all is not very busy. The busiest part of the flight is the descent over the congested SEA area.

AS739X- I have heard the same thing about YVR, but it has alot of transpac flights, and a few Trans Atlantic flights. SA - Utah">SLC has well, some US service courtesy of SA)">DL, and the only foreign airline is AM with service to HMO. But, AC could be downsizing, and that could be a reason. But KIX or JNB really surprise me, KIX would seem like it would have a huge domestic spine as Japan is famous for their 74Ds. JNB is home to SA. I was just kind of surprised to read that. btw, are you guys moving to the Intl. Terminal at SA - California">SFO, and do you think that NZ will indeed start 3x weekly 744 service?

Copaair737:
I think most of Osaka's domestic flights operate out of ITM, which is easier to get to than KIX is, henceforth the lower passenger numbers.

Zonks and Copaair737,

Actually, domestic flights withing Japan operate from ITM maily because landing fees at KIX are incredibly high. For this reason, the most intense activity is concentrated on ITM and airlines are not too keen on flying domestic legs to KIX, and they leave it for the "Premium" routes instead.

Add to KIX that in only operates currently one runway to handle all traffic, so that is definitely a barrier for more activity also, if that would be the case.

I'm sure that if landing fees were not so high, airlines would be thrilled to operate more constantly out of KIX, being the main international airport and having a lot of connecting passengers.

Are we all forgetting that Delta Airlines is changing more and more Salt Lake City flights over to Skywest? Are we also forgetting that Delta Airlines has no future plans to bring long-haul international traffic to Salt Lake City? You will see the Salt Lake City numbers for Delta Airlines drop over the next several years. Delta Airlines Salt Lake operation base will very easily mimmick that of Dallas/Ft. Worth! Sorry.... it is true!

We must also look and see the numbers of international traffic Inbound and Outbound in Osaka, Vancouver, and Johannesburg are huge compared to that of Salt Lake City. Delta Airlines may have at one time made Salt Lake City important ... However, not in the scheme of international traffic!

I just checked, and SLC was ranked ahead of ITM too. But, LHR001, Id have to agree with you, as I usually do, in that SLC passenger numbers will shrink with the shrinking of the DL mainline prescense.

Salt Lake City did have a lot of domestic traffic until Delta switched a load of flights over to SkyWest Airlines! Salt Lake City does not have a high O & D like that of Vancouver, and Osaka!

Lymanm, that's -27.5%, not -27.5 million. However, that 27.5% is still roughly 4 million passengers, though, and that's an enormous number all by itself.

Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok was ranked the busiest airport in Asia in terms of *international* passenger traffic last year. 33m passengers passed through the airport last year (compared with Don Muang's 32m). Because of SARS & the fact HKG was the second worst-hit region after China, passenger numbers fell off, and despite the impressive return to growth post-SARS, as we can see, end-of-year pax numbers won’t surpass last year’s (I guess the figure will be around 28, 29m this year).

Real pity though, coz many people were forecasting HKG to handle around 36-37m pax this year…

I don't know how much this would factor into their numbers, but SLC is also home to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which has an inherently close following with many members making annual journeys to SLC. Not to mention, it's the starting point for their worldwide missionary program, that has got to boost their numbers particularly to international gateways.

Despite the fact that DL is decreasing mainline flights @ SLC, you will see the number of daily movements from SLC go up. DL increased from like 280 daily dpeartures to like 310, due to more SkyWest flights.
