Have a look at these two A330-300s landing at Kuala Lumpur early in the evening...

Notice that the Thai Airways has two lights one by Door 2L whereas I have never noticed it on other A333s before (like the A333 with MAS) - what are these lights for and are they necessary?

Mas777,

These lights are what's known as wing inspection lights. They are pointed in such a manner that they provide light on the leading edge of the wing and on the inboard and intake part of the engine. They are used for inspection by the crew for ice on the leading edge of the wing as well to check for damage as well as other uses. Most if not all commercial a/c have these lights.
The lights are there on the MAS A333, but they are not turned on. If you look at the 4th and last windows from the L2 door and look closely on the blue strip just under the red, you will see them.
Here are some other examples of wing inspection lights on other a/c.

DC-9: Two in front of the wing and one behind close to the engine. The one by the engine sometimes has two separate lights, one to shine on the rear of the wing and one to shine on the engine inlet.

Sorry, I just wanted to add another good picture so you can get a good idea of what the wing inspection lights do.
This is a shot of an America West B757. You can see a good portion of the engine is lit up as well as most of the leading edge of the wing.
