Passenger Jet Escorted By 2 Fighter Jets Into BUR

Thu Dec 18, 2003 9:20 am

My roommate just called me to tell me that he just witnessed a passenger jet being escorted by 2 fighter jets into Burbank Airport. He was on the 405 freeway and said this just happened minutes ago.

I've just checked local news sources around Los Angeles, as well as national news and nothing has been said.

Has anyone heard anything about this?

While checking the news sources here, I came accorss this interesting tidbit:

Local Airport Renamed Bob Hope Airport

BURBANK — Burbank Airport will be renamed in honor of the late comedian Bob Hope today in a ceremony coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first flight.
The name change was unanimously approved by the city councils of Burbank, Pasadena and Glendale in November.

Hope, who spent six decades flying around the globe to entertain servicemen and women and kept a private plane at Burbank Airport, died at his Toluca Lake home on July 27 at the age of 100.

The 10 a.m. ceremony at the airport, attended by members of the Hope family, will include a fly-over of World War II aircraft, according to the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

The public can watch the event from the top of the airport's parking structure, the Airport Authority's Victor Gill said.

Cool.

As far I as know, when something weird happens on a plane now, fighters are scrambled.

I have a brother-in-law who's a doctor, and took care of a man in the cabin who fell violently ill as he approached the lavatory near the cockpit. The man passed out, and the FA's went looking for his belongings because he didn't have his ID on him. At some point, they phoned the incident in.

The plane landed with a fighter on each wing, no mention on the news or anything.

medical emergencies happen pretty frequently on flights. a medical emergency would not be cause for a fighter escort. perhaps the above mentioned flight had another (perhaps non-publicized) incident.

I was at BUR today between 1-2pm and live a mile south of the airport and I did not hear anything. Nothing out of the ordinary today. I'm sure if fighters were in the vicinity of BUR, I or my Dad (across town) would've heard them.

My roommate called me and told me that he saw this formation at 4:15PM (PST) over the 405 freeway in Encino.

According to a friend of mine at the BUR ticket counter for Alaska, there were no fighter "escorts." Apparently the fighter flybys were part of the ceremonies to rename the airport for Bob Hope.

Maybe it was the first arrival into "Bob Hope Airport" so they had fighters serve as an escort just for show.

I wish I saw this!
