Tahiti Nui: JFK Or EWR

Thu Dec 18, 2003 12:44 pm

Given the recent post, Air Tahiti Nui apparently wants to fly to "NYC". NYC can mean Newark, JFK, LGA (although impossible with 340's) and such. It will fly to either JFK or EWR, however, so which do you think it will choose? Thanks.

As much as I would love to see Air Tahiti Nui's planes at EWR I would tend to think that they would end up at JFK just for the prestige of it being the United States International Gateway. I may be very wrong though. Does anyone if Singapore's non-stop is going to be EWR or JFK?

It would definitely depend.

If they manage to arrange some kind of agreement or codeshare with CO (Not sure if they already have) my vote would obviously go for EWR, as they would almost guarrantee a daily full plane with connecting passengers.

If no relationships between them exists, I would say JFK without thinking much. It has fairly large domestic traffic and a good amount of international services from multiple carriers worldwide.

I really don't see them coming to the NY area, Qantas has reportedly been struggling with their service and Sydney-NY has a much larger market.

If they were, hopefully they would pick EWR Smile

Word on the forums is that it is indeed EWR, and that the JFK-FRA route will be dropped in favor of JFK-AMS.

Will TN ever start service to SFO? I have heard FJ coming in, and TN. Are there any truth to these rumors?

quick question. does Air Tahiti Nui have any kind of code-share of some kind w/ any airlines in the pacific (air new zeland, qantas, etc...)? to my knowledge they don't have any USA carrier partnerships. at least that would help with adding more Passenger to their flt to NYC. just like the example given about partnering up w/ CO at EWR...lots of connecting traffic to fill that plane up  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

B6FA - they codeshare on a Qantas flight between Auckland and Sydney, which connects with their flights between Auckland an Papeete.

They have an FF partnership with American Airlines.

According to Travel Agent magazine, where it was first covered, TN would serve JFK over a JFK-LAX-PPT-SYD routing.

I was under the impression that thier current flight was PPT-LAX-CDG-LAX-PPT, will the NY area stop be added to this flight and continue to CDG or will this be a different flight?

It will be a different flight, Marcus, as both SYD and JFK would be new cities and an additional A-340-300 would be acquired.

I think the schedule varies depending on the day of the week--some days it continues on from LAX to CDG, other days it terminates in LAX. Some days might even have both.

I'm just an outside observer, but it seems to me it would make sense to continue the (CDG-)LAX-PPT-AKL flight, and run a NYC-PPT-SYD flight that stops in PPT around the same time as the other one. That way CDG/LAX pax could connect to SYD, and NYC pax to AKL, making PPT a true mini-hub for North America to South Pacific traffic--even if only, say, 3 times a week. Getting a piece of the NYC-SYD market would definitely help fill those A340s.

Hopefully it will be EWR, but with their tendency to delay arrivals and departures when the weather turns sour, who knows. I notice that JFK tends to remain open and functional even in the worst weather.

FoxBravo - unfortunately, I am not certain how well Papeete Airport would handle having two or three flights processing at the same time. Certainly, when I was there a couple of years ago, we arrived (on Air NZ) shortly after the Lan Chile SCL-IPC-PPT flight. It took close to an hour for our luggage to appear (we were in business class, though in fairness, I think they messed up which can they opened first. The last people waiting were all of business class, and the crew!). I would also be dubious of how many people the check-in and customs areas could handle.

Here is a nice overview of PPT which shows the International Terminal. It also shows the other featre which impedes traffic capacity at PPT (though there isn't really enough traffic to actually be impeded), the lack of a taxiway. Aircraft must backtrack along the runway.

VirginFlyer, I have been to PPT, and I know it is not the largest facility--however, I am only talking about two A340s, which it can definitely handle--especially if a portion of those passengers were remaining in the transit lounge for onward connections to AKL and SYD. When I arrived, it was on a full 747 (AF, so no pax making international connections). I do recall a bit of a line for immigration, but I have seen much worse at major hubs like JFK and NRT, and at least we were being serenaded by live Polynesian music.  Smile There were no delays at all with the baggage.

Again, I am just an outside observer and I claim no knowledge of TN's actual plans. That's just something I would consider if I were doing their route planning.

Papeete can and has handled multiple wide body aircraft arriving at similar hours. I've been there often and at a time when Corsair, Air France and AOM were all on the tarmac awaiting incoming passengers. The line for immigration can be longish depending on the arrivals/departures and whether they are late or on time or not.

Anyway, Id hardly doubt they'd do an LAX-NYC run as they would not be able to carry local traffic. Plus you'd have to be dependent on traffic from the NE corridor to Tahiti. Atlanta would be a better destination but only nonstop to PPT (if possible) or either originating in CDG, but I've heard no mention of this routing. Also another 'rumor' on this was a PPT-JFK-Southern France or Italy routing (highly doubtful though). I think they'd be better choosing a stopover destination other than in the US as to avoid those ridiculous 'in transit visa' restrictions.

I just hope ATN doesn't 'overextend' themselves as there are already 2 daily flights from LAX to PPT as it is (and sometimes 3) and they are not always full. Cannot ever imagine an SFO route as it's truthfully just as easy to get to LAX. I've never heard of FJ coming into SFO either, they already service LAX and YVR.

Truthfully travel to FP is off and it's a long way from Europe or the East coast (especially when the Caribbean is faster and closer). but there is a huge building boom going on down there and the 'packaged' tourists defintely have arrived, and with the promise of 7-day $950 air/hotel packages on Moorea perhaps more will eventually come.

Ia Orana all !

Well, Like I have mentioned in another post, the route they are looking at is a NONSTOP PPT-NYC ! No stop anywhere !
They are not planning to fly to SFO either. Only 2 routes are SYD and PPT !
They are looking at 3 flights per week and thus need a new A343 to serve the route.
The other piece of news is that they are looking at codesharing with either ANA or JAL on their PPT-NRT route.

I would think it would be nonstop PPT-NYC, as they would face too much competition and require too many planes to do Paris flights (which are not 5th freedom as Tahiti is part of France). Also, since they would not be able to cabotage from LAX-NYC, that would be pointless as the planes have the range to make NYC (barely). That is the main reason QF flights can struggle at times, as a great deal of people on those SYD-LAX-JFK flights are SYD-LAX PAX and a 747 with 100 people is not the best scenario. I venture to guess they end the continuations after they fully move to Terminal 4 at LAX and just code with AA
