Large Markets Without ANY International Service

I was just curious to know some of the largest US markets without any international air service, even to Mexico and Canada. I know AUS is probably at the top of that list, it used to get a daily Air Canada flight to YYZ but it was dropped shortly after 9/11. AUS does have regular charters to Mexico, which, to my knowledge, provide the only usage of AUS's customs facility.

Anyone else have some candidates?

I'm mostly basing this off of my (limited) knowledge of these airports and the Air Canada interactive route map, but from what I can tell...

LIT
SDF
OMA
ABQ
DSM
RIC


Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see any of these markets having international service. Of course, I could be off... it's gettin' late around here.

I believe Louisville for a few years had B1900 nonstop service to Toronto (Air Ontario/Air Alliance, etc) , but has since been cut.

Although if you count UPS Worldport int'l traffic.....  Big grin

OK, I just checked the Census Bureau's rankings of metropolitan areas (http://www.census.gov/population/cen2000/phc-t3/tab03.pdf), and here's what I came up with. I've listed airports in the top 50 metro areas that either do not have international service, or that I'm unsure about. Based on what I know, I think STL is the largest metro area in the US without any international service.

Please take a look and see if any corrections need to be made:

#16: CLE (does it still have the CO 757 to LGW? What about Canada?)

#17: SAN (I know it lost BA but I'm sure there are some flights to Mexico at least)

#18: STL (does any international service remain? I think this may be the biggest metro area in the US without international service.)

#25: SMF (not aware of any international service here)

#26: MCI (Missouri may be really getting screwed on international service)

#27: MKE (recent topic on this board, just too close to ORD)

#29: IND (anything here?)

#30: SAT (I think Aeromexico and/or Mexicana has a few flights)

#31: ORF/Norfolk (nothing?)

#33: CMH

#35: MSY

#36: SLC

#37: GSO

#38: AUS

#39: BNA (nothing here anymore after the AA pullout, right?)

#40: PVD

#42: BDL

#43: BUF (any Canadian service?)

#45: PBI

#46: JAX

#47: ROC (Canadian service?)

#48: GRR/Grand Rapids

#49: OKC

#50: SDF

PBI has regularly scheduled service to Canada and the Bahamas and in season 2 or 3 times weekly flights to Manchester, UK and Birmingham UK (charter flights on Britannia)

Great, thanks for the update. What airlines fly the Bahamas and Canada routes? Is it AAEagle for the Bahamas?

CLE has the CO flight to LGW for the summer season and they do have service to YUL and YYZ on COEX.

Ssides,
CLE, SAN, IND, SAT, PBI, MSY, SCL, etc all have scheduled international service. Quite a few of the others feature yearround or seasonal scheduled charter int'l service as well.

Perhaps you'd instead yield better results by searching for large metro areas lacking yearround scheduled intercontinental service. All of the above destinations currently fit that description.

CLE does have strong year round charter service to both Mexico and the Caribbean. And yes the flight to LGW is seasonal from roughly April to October so more than half the year we do have nonstop service to LGW.

out of PBI, Air Canada serves Toronto, CanJet serves Montreal, Continental Express serves Nassau, Freeport, and Marsh Harbour. USAirways Express serves Marsh Harbour also. Laker does charter flights to Freeport and BahamasAir flies to Freeport and occasionally Nassau.

BDL (Hartford) has daily services to both Toronto and Montreal on AC Jazz, plus weekly Mexican and Caribbean charter traffic.

Mexico City (15x/week on MX)
MTY (13x/week on Aerolitoral/AM)
GDL (2x/week on MX)
SLP (2x/week on VW)

From SAN:
LTO: 2x
SJD: 7x
MEX: 7x one-stop

From SMF:
GDL: 7x

Of all the cities mentioned, San Diego has a large population and always ranks in the top 10 tourist destinations. Just not much heavy industry. Why no charter flights come here is beyond me.

SAN has two (2) daily flights to SJD. One on AM and one on AS. Also, AM has 2X to LTO and 2X to MZT. All AM flights continue on to Mexico City.

However, TIJ, situated right on the border, has around 50 daily flights into the interior of Mexico. What other U.S. city has that much access into Mexico? The facilities are less than 15 miles apart so I do count that as part of the San Diego airport system.

I find it odd, however, that if someone in Tijuana wants to fly to SJD, they would have to come to SAN for a non-stop (otherwise, connect at GDL). And SAN has 2 daily non-stop flights in that market!

As a side note...AC will resume non-stops to YYZ 02MAY04.

I wasn't aware that IND, MSY, and SLC had international service. Where can you go?

In addition to what's already been explained:

MSY features nonstop scheduled int'l service to Toronto, Canada and San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

We also have scheduled int'l charter service to Montego Bay, Jamaica; Freeport, Bahamas; and Cancun, Mexico.

Austin does have regularly scheduled international service via Mexicana's Aerocaribe arm 2x weekly to Mexico City

CMH, BNA, MKE, STL, MCI have service to Toronto via AC/Jazz
ROC, PVD to Toronto via Air Georgian
SMF to Guadalajara on MX

Ssides - BUF is to close to Canada to fly. You can get to Toronto by car in one and half hour. ROC has service to YYZ (Beech 1900D).

Norfolk has international service, just not from KORF or KPHF. Naval Station Norfolk has a 5-bridge terminal on board. Frequent flights to Iceland, Spain, and other countries leave weekly, usually on Omni Air (w/ a DC-10), ATA, or even Icelandair, among other carriers. Charters mostly, but scheduled nonetheless. I know the Icelandair 757 into Hampton Roads has been to ORF before, also.
