I don't see anything here about a DC-10 being painted in the new colors.....maybe we should have asked Santa for a new paint job on 1 NW DC-10  Smile

Interesting.....good news though as it would seem to indicate that some of the 742's will be around for a while longer. Looks as if the 742's are returning to NRT-HNL coming up in Jan.

Either that, or NW is wasting money by painting old 747's in the new colors like TWA did. But i'm going to give the team in MSP the benefit of the doubt.

The majority of NW's 742s were built in 1980+, so it would be no surprise to see them hang around for a while..

We have been hearing that also about Memphis going to 30 mainline flights. Only good news we heard is that the 4th bank will be back mid summer, or when NW cuts back on mainline flights there to make up for the capicity a bit.

Unless the fourth bank of flights returns (it won't this summer, as stated above), I can't see this happening.

Think about it:
With the new reductions, MEM has less than 200 daily departures. With the ARJ likely being phased out, that means that nearly 170 / 200 flights would be operated by aircraft with either 30 or 44 (and some 50) seats. And those 30 flights would be mostly to the West Coast, Florida, a couple Caribbean cities, MSP and DTW... that leaves very little capacity, and no premium cabin that NW has remained commited to, in places like ATL, ORD, LGA, DCA, etc.

On NW's proposed Spring 2004 schedules, mainline had been trimmed to 50 flights while CRJ and ARJ invaded most cities... but after the fourth bank was eliminated, mainline flights quickly returned (to make up for lost capacity).

There's little doubt MEM will become a regional hub for NW in the near future, the only question is when...

Maybe NW will be routing most of the South-Eastern traffic via ATL and code-share with DL. THe smaller markets only NW Airlink servers via MEM will most likely still be retained.

Again, the majority of NW's codeshare agreements with DL and CO are pure marketing -- when you book a ticket with NW but fly DL or CO, NW receives little or no money from the ticket. MEM is an important piece of NW's network; an NW network with hubs in just DTW and MSP (excluding NRT and AMS) wouldn't be nearly as viable as one with MEM. After the fourth bank of flights was restored, MEM's total flight count & capacity nearly reached pre-9-11 levels... people in MEM shouldn't complain.

How big as far as O&D is MEM?

MEM's often listed as having the smallest O/D traffic of any major hub airport... but for once the saying 'it's not the size that counts, it's how you use it' really is true: given the density of the southeast/heartland, MEM has an excellent location + among the lowest costs per passenger of any major hub airport thanks in large part due to the FedEx SuperHub.

My point of asking is that they might just decide to concentrate on the point to point makets for now. If it's that small, they don't need as much mainline. I guess size does matter.

It looks like AA is rethinking the STL downsizing....when they pulled the last of the 767 flights and cut down to just 80 or so mainline (md80 and a few 757) it put a real strain on the system. They have routed almost all of the east - west flying that had gone through here through ORD and DFW instead, but it seems like that is hurting them more than they thought. Hopefully NW will examine the problems AA is having here and not make similar mistakes with MEM. Ofcourse everyone here hates AA even more now than ever. STL is bound to serve as a hub like DL and CVG and NW and MEM. Still hoping for the pipe dream of a 744 service to AA), Japan">NRT out of MEM. I know...probably does not make sense, but still would love to see it.

The rumor about MEM "downsizing" has been going on for years! Yes CRJ's are there, but many of them are replacing the Saabs. AMS is going to continue there..that I have confirmation from two different VP's so that means they will need "main line" flying there.

The DC9-s are still around and will be for some time. It is my understanding that they are good until 2010. We still fly the -10, -30, -40 and -50. The -10 are not long lived, as they are getting close to timing out in the next few years.

Since the DC10-'s are going to be around for a while longer (the -30's which are late 1989 built) so when they come up for paint jobs they will be getting the new one too.

I expect NW to start phasing out their DC-9 fleet starting in 2006, when the new ICAO Stage IV noise emission rules come into effect. They'll be replaced by a combination of A319's and CRJ-700 planes, unless NW suddenly wants to get the Embraer 190/195 series.

I'm still waiting for the first NW DC-10-30 to be painted in the new livery, though.

It is inevitable. Every thread concering the fine airline known as NWA always gets sidetracked to a "when will they get rid of DC10/742/DC9" debate. Pretty funny actually.

The rumor about MEM "downsizing" has been going on for years!

It's not a rumor, NW is downsizing MEM. Originally CRJ/ARJ were to invade MEM this year, but then NW eliminated a quarter of the flights and restored mainline presence to make up some lost capacity.

Like I said before, I expect MEM to become NW's version of CO's CLE -- the only question is when.

...they might just decide to concentrate on the point to point makets for now...

If you look at a listing of destinations served ex-MEM, most of them are within the southeast... MEM pretty much plays the role of a regional hub, gathering traffic from within the southeast and shuttling it via DTW and MSP. The only places NW overflies DTW/MSP to is key business destinations, and cities where NW is strong (e.g. DSM, MSN, GRR).

Hmmmmm. Lets see now. MEM will go to 30 mainline flights by Dec and the forth bank will restart this summer. OK 30 divided by 4 is 7.5 mainline flts per bank. Can that ever work?

It's noted in the MEM newspaper that NW will sell 8 gates. But also note that the remaining gates would not be able to use the present jetways to get to CRJs as they dont go low enough. Not that making the pax work up and down stairs is out of the question, just lousy service. If Mesaba strikes and if ARJs are turned back that would free up about eight gates, Hmmmmmm.

M404,
Don't forget that of the 30 flights, almost half would be to DTW and MSP.

Here's a comparison of MEM's schedule for Winter 2004 from when NW originally cut the fourth bank while leaving only 40-50 mailine and when the restored the mainline:

Yup. That works out nice. Four banks (am sure that wont last) with one DTW, MSP each and the odd SEA LAS LAX SFO thrown in. But can it be profitable? Does CO do this little in CLE? Why did NW, in the most recent cut of 41 flights make 38 of them (Not sure on numbers but real close) Pinnacle? Could it have something to do with their new union?

Normally l'd say the the per flight fees of the regional carrier would make this impossible to support but since NW owns most of that company who knows where the money goes.

And are you in the tower right now to have all that info handy?

M404,

I believe that if NW could mimic CO with 300+ regional aircraft (turboprops + regional jets) on their behalf and 300-350 mainline aircraft (including retiring the DC-9 and ordering a handful more A32S), than they would do it. There was talk in early 2003 that NW would complete its Airbus A319/A320 orders on-time, and maybe exercise their options on a small number (single digit) more aircraft. In exchange, they'd retire the DC-9-10 and DC-9-50. This caused a squabble with the pilots union... why, I do not know. I believe this squabble also lead NW to restore mainline numbers at MEM. Truthfully, I don't know the full scope behind it.

CO only operates 30-40 mainline at CLE, mostly to the West Coast, Florida/Carribean, IAH/EWR and sometimes BWI, DCA and LGA. Yet they maintain CLE loses the most money of all of their network...

And no, I don't work for NW -- just well-informed I'd like to think.

Any update on the 747-200 in new colors? I would have expected to be out a long time ago. It's been in for nearly 3 weeks if it did in fact go in on the 19th.
