Sat Dec 20, 2003 1:56 pm

On the DC10 side.....we have just NW?? Right??

DL has 2 MD11's???? Which the 777 will replace in Jan???
What was the highest number of MD11's in the DL fleet at it's peak??

What about the L-1011 fleet of DL's?? WHat was that highest number??

Thanks

World Airways is using a MD-11 for its charter service LAS-HNL!

Northwest Airlines is using a DC-10 for its SEA-HNL, SEA-OGG!

Omni Air International is using a DC-10 for its charter service LAS-HNL!

I think it's safe to assume that Alex's question refers to pax flying wide body tri-jets ...

Definitely headed toward extinction in the USA. According to "Airways North American Airlines Handbook, 3rd Edition" ...

DC-10: Northwest, Omni Air Int'l, Ryan Int'l, and World

MD-11: Delta and World

L-1011: AmTran

All other operators are cargo carriers.

In Canada Air Transat (are they still flying?) has L-1011s, and so does BWIA if we extend to the whole North American continent.

Air Transat is one of the few operators still flying the L1011. BWIA has maybe two.

Every EA L-1011 was infested with cockroaches. It took months/years to get rid of them. All of the airframes required a lot of work, but it kept us mechanics busy. DL got the EA ships for cheap.....I believe $50 million for ten airplanes, spare engines and a simulator.

The first wide body flight I was ever on was a new Delta L-1011 in 1982. All I can say. Is WOW. Those were the days. Thanks for the answer.

There are actually two very special trijets that make appearances in the US:

Pardon my ignorance ... is Tradewinds still alive?

If they are, 3lions is correct.

ATA Has some L-1011's left in the fleet but once their turn is up for D-Check they are getting sent to the desert. Cost to much to repair and keep them maintained than they are actually worth.

Tradewinds is still alive, and well based out of Greensboro (GSO).

They are, however, retiring the L10-11-1F, which is the first L1011 freighter conversion and also the oldest L1011 in active service. It's supposed to be parked in GSO in a week or so.

They operate about 20 A300s for all other service out of Hartford, Dayton, Greensboro, Charlotte, Miami, Dallas, San Juan, Seattle, and Aquadilla.

ATA has 6 L-1011s left as of now, 4 -500's(N161-164AT), 1 -50(N188AT), 1 -100(N194AT). 188 retires 8/31/04 with 163 in 5/2005 and 162 in 10/2005 all as their D checks are due. 161 is here in IND for a light hangar visit and I was lucky enough to hear her spooling up those RB211-524's out on the ramp just a few hours ago....gotta love that sound!

In addition to ATA, Arrow Air still flys 2-3 L10 freighters to the Caribbean and you guys forgot about one of the coolest L10's, the Orbital Sciences rocket launcher Stargazer based out of Mojave.

Also, Air Transat is scheduled to retire their entire L10 fleet by May of this year....sad day.

I am very possibly wrong, but I beleive ATA has more than two L1011s (unless they just got rid of a couple). I see them all the time, so I'll have to take a look at registrations for you. I was on a series 500 just recently, and ATA had that plane looking pretty nice considering its age.

I was quite surprised to see those pics of the Flying Hospital. Can anyone tell what it's used for (and i dont mean 'as a hospital'), where and when?
