Online Check-in - A Disadvantage For Upgrades?

As a BA Exec Club member, I like to take advantage of their online check-in service and if I'm around at the time (24hrs before the flight) try to pick my preferred seat as early as I can.

Does this automatically disadvantage me for 'lucky' upgrades compared to people who check-in at the last-minute hoping the flight is over-booked?

I was thinking the other day how I was upgraded a few times (Y->J and Y->W) in the past when I always checked-in in person (although never last-minute). All of those times I was a Blue member and flew less frequently (and when I did it was normally discount Y). Yet in the last year or two since I started using online check-in, I've flown a lot more (and more often than not in W not Y), reached Silver...but not been lucky enough to get upgraded once.

Just curious!

I believe this varies airline by airline.

I've done online checkin on Alaska, Continental, and Northwest, and each is different. On Alaska, you can only upgrade a Y fare, and to do so for partner-airline clients requires a special certificate from the partner airline. On Continental, their computer meticulously upgrades their own Platinums and then their partners. These upgrades are visible online at checkin. Others may be upgraded at the gate depending on availability.

Northwest upgrades their own Platinums up to a week in advance of flying -- upgrades a visible online. Golds are upgraded, depending on availability, three days before flying. Silvers can request upgrades 24 hours before flying by calling an 800 number or may be upgraded at the gate depending on availability.

Everyone does upgrading differently.

I think generally there are two ways of getting an upgrade:
(1) as an elite member, but most of those upgrades are given at the gate where they can see the latest seat availabilities. The key is just to ask the gate agent. Mostly at the check-in they will tell you to ask again at the gate.
(2) flight overbooked, seems indeed that late-comers have higher chance of being upgraded, but so is their chance of being dropped from the flight at all!
