Flying Out Of PHL On Christmas Eve; High Loads?

Mon Dec 22, 2003 7:25 am

This is mainly directed towards the PHL boys, but anyone can chime in if you wish. And I do apologize because there have been several threads similar to this one in recent days, but none specifically answer my question.

I'm flying out of PHL on US87 this coming Wednesday (6:05PM departure). I was wondering if there are high loads on Christmas Eve and I should plan to get to the airport a bit earlier than usual to compensate for long lines? Any input is appreciated. I'm taking a SEPTA train in from Glenside to save my relatives from having to drive me to the airport (as I usually do), and trains depart hourly. I figure I should take the 3PM train. That means I get to the airport at 4PM. Two good hours to get through everything. Let me know.

DeltaMD11:

I am familiar enough with PHL to know that it will be very busy on Christmas eve. I would suggest leaving some extra time. If I were traveling from PHL on that day, I would definitely leave extra time.

PHL has places to eat and shop and things of that nature, so a little extra time there won't be bad.

I figure in a situation like that one, it's better to have left the time and not need it rather than arrive at the gate two minutes before departure in panic mode. Ya know??  Smile

Happy Flying and Merry Christmas!!

PiedmontGirl,
Thanks for your quick response. PHL is my home airport and fly out of it quite often, just never on Christmas Eve so I don't know what to expect. And heck, I don't mind sitting there for a little while if I'm early. I love to be down there and watch the action anyways.

Almost any airport is extremely busy on Christmas eve. With Christmas falling on a Thursday, all folks have to do it take one day of vacation and have a four day weekend like over Thanksgiving. So, I am thinking it will be a madhouse.  Smile

PHL is not a bad airport at all. If you have a lot of time, you can get a munchie and a cup of gourmet coffee, find a good spot and watch the action. Shoot, you could even pick up a box of Godiva Chocolates for some lucky lady.

Thanks! I appreciate it.  Smile

I flew from DCA-ORD-DFW last Christmas Eve and it was kinda busy at DCA. But the real kick was my 777 flight on AA from DFW-ORD, the flight wasn't even half full as we departed ORD at 6pm bound for DFW at approx. 8-9pm. Get this, the AA/DL terminal in ORD was deserted as if you were flying on Xmas day or if it was like 2-3am. Seemed like I was and few passengers in the terminal. Christmas Eve isnt much as busy as if you flew on December 23. But I would head out to PHL much earlier then expect unless if you hold a paper ticket and use the USAirways ticketing kiosk or check in at home, which you can save some time.

Oh yea, dont forget the new terror alert is now set to high, so if you are checking bags, advise you to take the 2pm train to PHL and im sure TSA will be busy and frustrated on that day too so lines will be long at sercurity.

Hi DeltaMD11,

Currently your flight looks like this:

PHL SAN 1224-1805/1224-2107 US 87 F7 P7 A7 E7 Y7 B7 H7 M7 Q7 V6 L5 W5 S5 T3 (321)

Which looks to me like it's pretty light, since you can still get seats in even the cheapest buckets.

Of course this doesn't mean the airport won't be stuffed with people eager to get home for the holidays.  Smile

Usair,
I'm known to always walk onto a plane with a huge cup of coffee so if you have the time and would like to the coffee is on me. I'll be in Terminal B, I suspect you'll be in A-West. I'm always up for meeting fellow a.net members, as they are (generally speaking, I can think of a few exceptions) quality people. Send an e-mail to bryanpainter757@hotmail.com if you would like to and we'll set something up.

DeltaMD11:

I just ran a check on 87 PHL-SAN 12/24. There are a tiny number of seats left for sale. There are also tons of non-revs listed for the flight, so it's going to be full. If there's an empty seat left after the passengers board, a non-rev will be in it.

My opinion is that PHL is going to be a zoo.  Smile

DeltaMD11 -- you may want to consider an earlier train.... Today's Philadelphia Inquirer explained how often the regional rail trains are late, particularly to the Airport....

Too bad for the people flying non-rev on Xmas eve since paying passengers get priority first. When I flew non-rev or standby on United, I usually fly when it's not a busy travel day.

Enjoy your trip to San Diego, Bryan.
Happy Holidays!

I know. I am thinking that a lot of these people just couldn't do any better and figure at least trying to get someplace is better than just staying where they are. Ah......non-rev travel.

Mostly they will probably make it to where they are going on Christmas day unless it's to Florida -- then all bets are off.

I'd advise giving web check-in a shot if its actually working that day Bryan...I can imagine the lines for check-in will be ridiculously long so this will save you a ton of time...all youll need to do is then make it through security when your there...thus, only 1 long line instead of 2...

However, try using it well before you plan to leave for the airport because its not the most reliable system...its quite frequently down, but if it works it will be a tremendous timesaver...

Have a good trip!

Greg,
I've never done web check-in before. So I check in on the web and then what do I do with my luggage that needs to be checked? Walk out and give it to curbside once I get to the airport?

Without a doubt, web check-in would be the way to go. And although I'm sure that everyone here knows this already, just a reminder: If you're traveling with gifts, please make sure that they're unwrapped. Makes it a lot easier for everyone.

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, have a joyous Kwanza & whatever else applies.

Can someone please advise me on how to go about getting my luggage checked-in if I check in on the web? What is the general procedure once you get to the airport?

My understanding is if you have luggage you will need to checkin via Kiosk, curbside, or desk. I did checkin online once then at the airport rechecked in after I realized I should check it. If you ever travel without luggage and only a carryon web checkin is the way to go.

Ahh...good point...Im one of those carry-on only travelers..perhaps a skycap at curbside could do it?

Greg,
I'm thinking that I could just walk out and give it to a skycap. I'm a bit nervous about it though and rather than take a chance and potentially causing a mess, I'll just check-in like usual at the desks. Doesn't bother me to stand there for a little while.
