Alternative View On WN In PHL

Tue Dec 23, 2003 3:13 am

After being shocked to hear WN was coming here to PHL, I was worried what effect it would have on US. When WN announced their initial destiniation, it didn't seem like they were going right at US right away, but at TZ, HP and FL. Then I started thinking that in some ways, it could maybe help them. US has the hub of their European and Caribbean flights out of PHL. I don't see US giving that up, especially, with the money they put towards the new international terminal. With WN feeding into PHL with their new flights, couldn't people use that service to connect with US flights going to Europe and the Caribbean? I could be out of my mind, but it was just a thought that I had.

Possibly, but not very likely. If it were more likely, wouldn't there be more Int'l service from BWI? Or from Stansted and Luton? But you are correct, the first cities WN plans to serve are the mostly lower yield cities, which surprised me.

In the post-deregulation era, connecting between different airlines (other than alliance partners) is increasingly rare. If someone is going to fly US to Europe from PHL, they will likely just fly to PHL on US (or UA, with the codeshare), then connect. This will not help US's international loads.

I too was a bit surprised about WN's destinations, but I think it wants to start slowly to adjust to such a large, busy airport. It will be interesting to see how it adapts.

WN has no interline agreements with US, or any other airline for that matter. In order to combine a trip on WN and US, you would have to buy 2 separate tickets and make sure you coordinated your own reasonable connecting times at PHL. Also, if any of your flights were late/cancelled, you'd have no recourse if you missed your connection.

i think WN entry into phl was to hold their ground and fight off jetblue. jetblue has dominated jfk, they are headed to bos, what's the next major northeast metropolis? the philly area.
