Quietest Airliner In The World?

Tue Dec 23, 2003 4:07 am

Having TWA as an airline for many years, I have to say I never really got a good chance to answer this question, as TWA's fleet consisted of old aircraft like the DC-9, 741, L-1011, and 727. The 757 I would think is one of the quietest, but STL rarely gets aircraft bigger than that nowadays. So, what, in your opinion, is then is the quietest airliner (jet) that you have seen/heard?

Simple: The 717. You could hear a pin drop at take off. The ERJ-145 is very quiet as well, for a RJ.

The 717 and BAE 146/Avro's are very quiet on takeoff hardly any noise.

I'm probably gonna get beat up for this... A340-300...  Big grin

The 717 might be quieter than the MD80/DC9 series, but I've had the dubious pleasure of sitting right next to the engines on 4 flights between LIH, HNL and OGG - and back there, it really wasn't all that quiet.

Although I'll agree with you that the MD80/DC9/717 series is a dream of quiet flying if you're in one of the first 5 rows...

I would have to agree with ATA L1011 - 717's and the BAE 146 are probably the quietest jet airliners I've heard. I recently spent a few hours in HNL watching the departing flights and Hawaiian's 717's were remarkably quiet (especially when compared to Aloha's 732's!!) The CRJ is also quiet, but I think the 717 has it beat....

hii folks!!

My choice goes to the VICKERS VC-10.

Everybody who flew that aircraft knows that the cabin of VC-10 was one of the most well insonorized ever built. And with the engines on the rear, like a DC-9, the VC-10 is absolutelly quiet.

I remember some friends on BOAC, now retired, they say that somepeople went to the offices of BOAC to buy their tickets, and they requested flights with the VC-10, and when they didn't knew the name of the plane, they say "that airplane with four engines on the rear".

Very nice aircraft... Here one foto... just to kill the "*SAUDADES"!

The quietest commercial jet I've flown in is the 717. Granted, it's noisier towards the back, but in that area it's not as noisy as the DC-9/MD80.

The A340-200 is the quietest widebody I've flown in.

Cheers, Ralph

For its class the Airbus A342/3 has the quietest cabin for PAX. For people on the ground I think its the Avro Liner?

Not sure about this one...

Out of what I heard yesterday @ SOU...

Two simultaneous take offs that consisted of an ERJ-145 and a BAe 146-200.

The ERJ was the quietest by far!

I'll have to agree with many of you in that the 717 is probably the quietest plane (at least that I've been on) from the passenger's perspective. In its "class", though, I think the A330-200 or 300 is the quietest.

As for which is quietest according to an outside observer, you really need to look at the exact noise footprints to determine that. I don't think it can come down to personal opinion...

dont find the Avro/ BAE very quiet. The F70 however was a bliss. Both are reasonably quiet on the outside though.

The only time i saw a VC10 was when it came to AMS due to fog in Eindhoven. (RAF from Brizr Norton) It could not take off once the fog cleared because it would exceed the (daily) noise pollution level  Laugh out loud

Okay, I don't get it.

The VC-10 and the IL-62 have much the same design. How can one be so quiet and the other so earsplitting?

I would have to say the FRJ that ACA flies. The only time that it is really loud is when they are starting up the engines and starting their taxi. Other than that, I barely hear them take off or land.

According to the FAA's noise documentation, the Fairchild-Dornier 328JET (FRJ) has, on average, the lowest external noise levels on takeoff, approach, and landing. The 717 and CRJ-200 are close competitors.

As far as I know, there is no official index of cabin noise levels, although these figures are measured by the manufacturers.

Quietest business jet is the Cessna 560 Citation Excel. On take off the plane has like a low jet engine "whistle" sound. At my home airport (ISP) planes are not allowed to take off before 6am, but the Cessna 560 is allowed to take off before 6am cause of how quiet it is.

I am going to have to say the A340 series. Not only did the cabin seem to have reduced engine noise, but overall vibration, creaking etc., seemed to be greatly reduced.

I am sure that for non-wing mounted airliners, one would have a quieter experience sitting near the front. Unfortunately I have only ever gotten to sit next to the engines in the back. Most memorably a 9 hour experience from EWR to TPA. Yes you read that right. "We are 37 in line for de-icing, 28 in line for take-off, 16 in line to be re-deiced" ...or something to that effect.

I whole heartedly agree. I used to work at FLL, and one time I was able to get as legally close to 9L/27R as possible during an MD-90 takeoff. I could have literally maintained a "normal" conversation as it went by me at rotation. I was totally amazed. Became an MD-90 fan at that instant. Too bad the aircraft didn't do as well as MD hoped.

Regrettably, Concorde is now the quietest airliner in the world.

The quietest airliner in the world? Unquestionably the Air Canada B757 - The Gimli Glider.

Gimli Glider was a 767....  Smile

But yes, when the MD-90 was unveiled, it was touted as, "the world's quietest jetliner." As to whether it still is... I am not sure. Since a variation of the same engine that powers the MD-90 also powers the A320 (IAE v2500), maybe the A320 and MD-90 are similar in noise levels, and neither may be the quietest any longer.

Maybe the Avro RJ-100 is the quietest? I have no idea as to that being the case, but since the BAe 146 was the quietest at one time (prior to the rollout of the MD-90) and the ARJ series was significantly quieter, maybe the ARJ is in there somewhere?

As I said, as to the MD-90... depends on what has come following its launch, but it was most certainly the quietest at one point.

Since I fly a lot on CX, I have to make my decision based on CX fleet.
I was on A340-600 three times within 2 weeks and sitting in the business class was absolutely heaven, so quiet and comfortable. The A330 was nice (economy) but sometimes, the engine will sound louder and then went soft (maybe it is due to the auto-trottle setting) overall, it is also quiet. The B777 is another quiet plane after it has reached cruising attitude. B777 when accelerating for take off has a very high pitch noise that was disturbing. About the only aircraft that I find noisy is the B747, in Business class (main deck) or economy. I think most B747 air-con system are set in a way that the rush of air was especially annoying on long distance. Sitting after the main wing can cause you ear deaf. I think the air-con on Airbus are of more advanced design. Again, that is just my opinion.

There is a bit of a misconception here about the VC-10. It may have been a quiet airplane on the inside but on the outside it was an earsplitter! I have a photo of a VC-10 on an early test flight and as it flew over these 4 guys standing by the runway had to literally block their ears with their hands to stop their eardrums from exploding.

The quietest would have to be:
BA-146
717
A330
CRJ
Dash 8
MD90- i remember when the MD90 first came out in the mid 90's McDonnell Douglas had a special advertisement for it saying it was the quitest commercial airliner in the world.

Yes the VC-10 is definetly not quiet. Neither is the Il-62 for that matter. Basic Il-62s with NK-8 engines were very loud. Today's Il-62 is with the quieter D-30KU turbofans. On the inside they are both quiet.

The 717 is the quietest a/c operating today, so quiet in fact that it does not have to perform the standard noise abatement departure from John Wayne Orange County Airport (SNA). The interior is extremely quiet as well, I've flown on a number of 717s and can always carry on a normal conversation when sitting in any section of the cabin.

Yet another stupid remark - "Airbuses are nothing but noisy & clumbsy".

I have flown on the A340-300 a couple of times and I do agree wholeheartedly with some of the forumers here that it does have one of the quietest sound profiles and is pretty smooth in the cabin while flying.

And FYI, that word is spelt as clumsy, not clumbsy.

Inflight, extended periods, the CRJ family are very quiet. But just wait till they get to lower the landing gear . . . and then land as well as taxi like a go-kart.

The 717 has been mentioned often in this topic, but the A320 is just as quiet on takeoff and hands down is the most stealth on landing of any airliner right now.

The quitest Aicraft from inside I've ever took is The A 340.
