Reuters are reporting that a man has been arrested at MIA with a hacksaw blade and razor blade concealed in his shoe. He was travelling with his wife and children.

How stupid can you get?!

The guy was/is local and he is coming home here to PHL tonite to stay with family for the holidays. According to FOX news (I just saw the story), he was carrying the blades (razor and hacksaw) for protection. Coming from Brazil, kidnaps are a realistic possibility and he hid the blades for that reason. Did he forget about them? Beats me. I think I would've remembered...

which makes you thankful that the Shoe Bomber taught us that nothing can be ruled out as a possible terrorist weapon.

I haven't heard about any terrorists taking their family with them to do their work but shoes don't have real good toolboxes.

I have no idea what would possess him to do that, but he apparently has no concern for his children. Just what the kids need: a dad in jail for trying to smuggle weapons on board an airplane.

Whee in Brasil did he begin his journey? I would suspect that whichever airport it is it will come under some intense scrutiny. I remember when BA temporarily cancelled flgiths to Caracas after a passenger was able board a flight and land at LGW with a hand grenade.

Presumably as he is now flying home to PHL the police in Miami are satisfied that it was a genuine mistake, but like I say, a pretty stupid one. Given the state of affairs with security etc you would expect people to think about these things.

Pat on the back for the security people at MIA though for discovering the weapons - it could so easily have been a more sinister situation rather than a stupid mistake.

Couldn't be worse than when I flew first class in UA two weeks ago, plastic dinnerware, but real glass for soda.Anyone could break glass and cut any part of the body. Somewhat dumb if I you ask me.

SprxflySWA,
in reality, just about any object can be used as a weapon w/ enough thought and ingenuity. Even pillows and blankets could be pressed into sinister service. While the most obvious weapons must be eliminated, it is impossible to remove everything that could be a weapon. It is for that reason that the cockpit must be secure and airlines and the gov't need to know as much about who is boarding the plane.

We must screen for dangerous articles because we are not permitted, under Federal law, to screen for dangerous persons.

Yes, nearly anything could become a weapon. What we need to come down on will full force is those things that could not be anything but a weapon.

I think at least three months' interrogation by the experts at Gitmo seems appropriate. We need to know all about this guy.

SprxflySWA,

Have you ever tried to break one of these glasses on an airplane? They are made of tempered glass and:
1) they are extremely strong - you can drop one from 1.5m on a concrete floor - it won't break
2) if you actually manage to break one, it shatters into very small pieces with blunt edges (like car windows)

Our glasses are not made of tempered glass. I agree that they are potential weapons, as are the plastic cutlery. A plastic knife is a lot sharper than the metal ones we had.
