Finnair Gets 6th MD-11!

Tue Dec 23, 2003 9:13 pm

Press release
23.12.2003

Finnair to acquire sixth MD-11 for growing Asian traffic

Finnair has decided to acquire a sixth MD-11 for its long-haul fleet. The agreement on the lease of the MD-11 wide-body aircraft has been signed with Boeing Capital Corporation. The aircraft is to join the Finnair fleet towards the end of spring 2004.

As of June 2004, the additional capacity brought by the aircraft will be used to increase frequencies to Finnair's current Asian destinations. The strong Asian emphasis of Finnair's long-haul strategy has proved to be the correct choice as Asia is the fastest growing air transport market area.

"A fifth MD-11 was added to the Finnair fleet in the beginning of 2003 and so the newcomer will add to the number of long-haul aircraft. Next summer we will have 50 per cent more capacity in our long-haul traffic compared to early 2003," says Finnair COO and EVP Scheduled Passenger Traffic Henrik Arle.

Finnair currently operates over twenty weekly frequencies to Asian destinations. From the start of the summer schedule in March, the number of weekly flights to Beijing will increase from five to six. As of June 1st, Beijing flights will become daily. Finnair's other destinations in Asia are Bangkok, with daily frequencies, Hong Kong, Osaka, Tokyo, Shanghai and Singapore.

Demand on Finnair's Asian routes has grown by almost 40 per cent during this past autumn compared with autumn 2002. The majority of passengers on the Asian routes are from Asia. A quarter of Finnair passenger and cargo revenues come from Asia meaning that it is the second largest source of income after European traffic and more significant than domestic traffic. The growing Asian traffic is also increasing passenger numbers on European routes. Demand in Finnair's scheduled traffic grew over 20 per cent in November.

The MD-11 aircraft has over 280 passenger seats of which 42 are in Business Class.

Hi!

Nice to hear that we will still have few airlines in Europe operating the MD-11 for a while after Alitalia dropped MD-11s from its fleet and KLM is dropping their MD-11s. We also have LH Cargo flying with MD-11Fs...
I have heard that the plane would be ex CityBird OO-CTB (cn 48766) which has been is storage for a while and have been offered for lease by Boeing Capital.

The last passenger MD-11 (now OH-LGE) was also flown by CityBird (ex OO-CTC) before it was leased by Finnair!
I am afraid that the MD-11 wont see the next decade in Finnair's fleet because the leasing contract for OH-LGA is ending in 2006 and then I assume Finnair is going to look for new airplanes to replace its MDs  Sad But as long as we have time to see MD-11s in Europe lets enjoy watching AND hearing the GEs and PWs roar on the runways! FLY DC JETS!

Do you think that Finnair might purchase some 777's in the future or even 744's ?

Viva the MD11, for some reason I have always had a soft spot for her... I have flown on that type quite a few times.

I don't expect to see a replacement for the M11's in the air already in 2006. I would think it's possible to get a pretty good deal for an extension on the lease. I'm pretty sure some serious calculator work is being done in a certain building in HEL though, regarding the replacements for the M11's.

AMM744, No I don't think that Finnair is going to go with Boeing because the main thing at the moment with Finnair is their saving program and one thing with the program is that the fleet has to be united. That's the reason they are replacing their old MD-80s with Airbus narrow bodied planes. Some of the MD-80s are placed for Nordic Airlink, the new subsidiary of Finnair, flying in Sweden and competing with SAS. Finnair is also placing the ATRs for Aero and the new commuter planes (maybe Embraer 170 series) are likely to be placed for FinnComm Airlines which flies with one ex Swiss ERJ145 between Helsinki and Stuttgart. So the new planes to replace the MD-11s will be likely coming from Tolouse!

Regarding the replacement, I would be bery surprised if AY did not go with Airbus. But you never know, if they get a really good deal...

The Ticketor, that might be true but I assume they have already some discussions going on considering the replacement of MD-11. One thing which is important for the new airplanes is the cargo capacity! Because Finnair doesn't have a cargo arm, the MD-11 is ideal for Finnair because of its huge cargo capacity. Almost every AY flight going and coming from/to Asia is full of cargo. The MD-11 PAX version is expensive airplane to fly but the cargo capacity compensates the costs flying this bird.

Regarding the cargo capacity, I've sometimes played with an idea that Finnair might order B744 Combis to replace the MD11...

This will not come through, I know, but one can always hope.  Big grin

When the MD-11s are going to be replaced (which is going to be a sad, sad day for me too) I would like to see the B777 in Finnairs colours instead of A340.. after flying with both I prefer the triple seven to A340 for some reason. But that is most likely not going to happen, I don't think my opinion counts that much Big grin With cargo capacity the B777 would be quite suitable for AY..

I really hope they'd choose a mix of B777-300ER and 200ERs after the MD11. Then introduce a 2-2-2 business/first type cabin as well as 3-3-3 economy. But looking at the current MD11 config, it would more likely be 2-3-2 and 3-4-3... Personally I find the 9-abreast 777 Y config so much more comfortable than 8-abreast A340.

I've never flown the type, so I'm happy that this plane still remain in the air in europe.

I think that this is an interim plane: seeng the manufacturer data, it's more expansive, have less range, and the ratio payoad/max take off weight is one of the worsth between modern wide bodies.
With this strong growth (Finnair PAX rising, opening new subsidiares, HEL has just opened a new runway, etc...) Finair will need soon new aircraft.
For his route I think that a mix of A 330-300 and 340-300 or B777-200 or 767 300 (like alitalia) and will be OK.

The Alitalia MD-11s have been bought by Lufthansa for cargo conversion.
UPS is also buying more MD-11s to replace their aging B747-100 and -200s.
The MD-11 is agreat ecomonic cargo plane.

Finnair should look into buying more SWISSs and KLMs MD 11s if they are so happy with the aircraft and want to increase ASIAN and NORTH AMERICAN frequencies.

Swiss' MD-11 have PW4462 engines and Finnair has the GE CF6-80C2D1F engines but KLM has also the GE engines fitted to its MD-11s. But I don't think they are going to get any more of MD-11s because they are not going to fly in Finnair's fleet for a long time. AY is going to start replacing them with the new planes (likely to be Airbus) from 2006...

Behramjee,

Well, the MD-11s of Swiss and KLM are powered by PW engines and Finnair's current MD-11s have GE engines, so I guess it will be impossible acquire more from them. Finnair's problem at the moment is that there are only a very few GE powered MD-11s available in the market.

Anyway, this was excellent Christmas present from Finnair that they acquired 6th MD-11! Thank you! Rumors were true indeed and this really happened. I have flown many times on B744, B767-300, B777-200/300, A330 and A340, but for some reason MD-11 is my favorite too!!!  Love  Big thumbs up

Happy MD-11 flights wishing,

Nice that KLM decided to keep them for a while! So we still have few MD-11 operators in Europe left!  Big thumbs up And now because KLM has decided to keep their MD-11 fleet there aren't so many free GE equipped MD-11s in the market left because the freight operators have been converting them into freighters.

Seems to me, the MD-11 is one of the few aircraft which actually gets sold on the used-aircraft-market. Maybe MDD didn't do everything wrong with this plane....

GOTbound, congratulations to choose Finnair's MD-11 for your first MD-11 ride. In my opinnion AY's MD-11 look very new inside with the new interiors and new seats! I hope you enjoy your first MD-11 flight with your girlfriend!

GOTbound, hopefully you don't fly with OH-LGE. The new seats are good but the air condition in that plane isn't good at all. Well my flight HEL-JFK was in July and I was sitting on the sunny side...but it was too hot in there! -LGA was better...

By the way, -LGA is the first built passenger MD-11 and -LGE is the last.
