Need More Info On Spirit Airlines

Wed Dec 24, 2003 1:26 am

I'd like some more information about Spirit. I departed from FLL yesterday and noticed quite a few Spirit aircraft. Do they only operate MD80's? Where do they fly? Is FLL a hub? Thanks!

I think they just applied to serve a whole number of international destinations south of FLL and plan to make it a little like AA at MIA.

Does Spirit have any plans on increasing flights out of ORD?

Spirit is about 12-15 years old (depending on whether you count their early charter years). They have kept a low profile by building a customer base slowly, leveraging the leisure travel market. They operate 30+ MD80s but are expected to start looking for modern replacements soon (2004) from A or B. Home base is Fort Lauderdale (the started with a Detroit base and moved about 4 years ago).

They still operate a big reservation center in the suburbs of Detroit. They relocated the corporate Headquarters only they still are big in DTW.

Spirit is doing pretty good lately.

They recently increased the number of flight out og LGA to MCO and FLL by one or two each.

Thier only fault was painting over their 10th Anniversary plane. It really sucks seeing N814NK in regular colors, although it seems extra shiny.

FLL is there home base, and I just learned from the forum that they were origionally based in Detroit. Interesting.

They fly out of H concourse here, all MD-88s. Depending on the time of day, you will either see a lot of Spirit planes here or you will see none. They are a very good airline, considering that they are still a private company, and have been growing a lot since 9/11.

I've never flown spirit but have not heard great things. HOwever, USAToday did an article on it and gave it a great review. One thing that i found very interesting is that the CEO of spirit is certified to fly the MD-88. According to the article, spirit is looking into buying new aircraft and deciding between boeing and airbus.
