U.S.-Middle East Nonstops

Wed Dec 24, 2003 6:50 am

The only nonstops from the United States to the middle eastern region on a U.S.-based airline that I am aware of are CO's flights to Dubai and Tel Aviv from EWR. Are there others? And is it true that a couple U.S.-carriers are interested in initiating operations to Baghdad?

Just curious. Any help would be appreciated.

I would like to know what CO flights go to Dubai or anywhere near it, let alone nonstop. Maybe you are refering to Malaysian Airlines flight from EWR-DXB. Emirates is set to start JFK-DXB this year with the A345's.....Kuwait Airways has been doing JFK-KWI for sometime now.Saudi also flies nonstop to Jidda from the eastcoast....Delta airlines flew to Dubai for a short time via Cairo.Further west,Royal Jordanian does JFK-AMM

KHI747-
Maybe I'm mistaken by thinking CO serves Dubai.

Thanks for the help.

To my knowledge there are NO US-based airlines serving Mideast countries other than Israel, except as a codeshare with a non-US airline. TWA used to serve Cairo and Riyadh, and Delta supposedly briefly served Cairo and Dubai, but both of these services are long gone. As a practical matter, I think it will be along time before you see this type of service again, as European and even Mideast carriers offer ample service direct or connecting through a European hub. Israel is of course a special situation as it receives alot of money from the US and many Americans are also Israeli citizens.

Continental's service to Tel Aviv is the only US carrier service to the Middle East. Before 9.11, TWA flew to Cairo and Riyadah, and Delta flew to Cairo, Dubai, and Tel Aviv. Between the US and the Middle East, the following carriers provide service:

Continental Airlines to Tel Aviv (from Newark).

Egyptair to New York City/JFK.

El Al Israel Airlines to Chicago/O'Hare, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City/JFK,
and Newark.

Malaysian Airlines to Newark (to/from Dubai en route to Kuala Lumpor).

Royal Jordanian to Chicago/O'Hare, Detroit, and New York City/JFK.

Saudi Arabian Airlines to New York City/JFK and Washington/Dulles.

I might be leaving something out, but I think the list is complete.

Pigs are also said to fly... which right now, looks moer likely to happen than any EK nonstops to the USA

Pigs are neither halal nor kosher! Actually, I predict that EK will give it a shot and if the traffic's not there, will quickly drop it.

Didn't EK flt to IAH for a bit with AB340? Also, wouldnt the MH flight be quicker to KUL if it flew the polar route? Why do they transit DXB? Also, are they exercising cabotage on the route, or is DXB strictly for techops?
Thanks.

AK- It was GF (Gulf Air) and they served both IAH and JFK as recently as 1997 I believe. I understand they will be coming back to JFK as they have apparently won a UN contract to operate between JFK, GVA, and BAH.

AK- I don't know if it was the same flight or two different ones, but I do know that the JFK-BAH flight was originally supposed to be nonstop but eventually went via LCA, not sure if it was for fuel or what. The new service will be via GVA. I miss the GF "I Dream of Jeannie" girls here...

Not to mention the fact that it is one whale of a busy market. Lots and lots of people traveling between Tel Aviv and the US.

Continental does not fly to Dubai. It code shares with Emirates, from EWR via LGW (EWR/IAH-LGW is CO, LGW-DHX is EK).

The nonstop flights from the USA to the Middle East are:

Continental (EWR-TLV)
EL AL (EWR, JFK and LAX to TLV)
Egyptair (JFK-CAI)

Saudi Arabian Airlines also flies to JFK and IAD.

Royal Jordanian does not operate nonstop service to Amman. All flights are operated via AMS or SNN (from JFK and ORD).

In the past, these airlines flew nonstop to the Middle East:

TWA (JFK-TLV, JFK to Kuwait City, JFK to CAI, then on to Riyadh)
Delta (JFK to DHX and JFK to TLV)

Thanks for the info!

I recently read somewhere that a few U.S.carriers were interested in initiating operations to Baghdad. Any truth to this? (For example: NW direct from DTW, large Iraqi population in the suburbs)

Ok, CAI is not located in the middle east(asia), but in Africa. There is a small part of Egypt that is part of the middle east (asia) which is the Sinai peninsula.

Therefore all of those JFK-CAI flights do not count!

The nonstop flights from the USA to the Middle East are:

EL AL (EWR, JFK and LAX to TLV)

Only EWR and JFK are non-stop. LAX is via YYZ. El Al has also flown to MIA and ORD since September, both via EWR, though MIA may be non-stop this summer.
