Cute Aviation-Related Movie Rental 4 The Holidays

Wed Dec 24, 2003 9:33 am

Okay, you've stuffed yourself with holiday food, it's blustery cold outside and you're looking for something to occupy the family for a couple of hours.

"View From The Top" starring Mike Myers and Gwyneth Paltrow is an enjoyable rental about a young woman who dreams of being an international flight attendant (first class, of course.)

Candace Bergen does an excellent job in her role as a flight attendant-cum-author who claims to have invented the "double-finger pointing method" of pointing out exit doors.

It's a "fun" flick, with some pretty humorous scenes (one where Mike Myers is leading the in-flight training and he's wearing a vest that says "Disgruntled Passenger.")

Anyway, something light to watch over the holidays. I loved the ice sculpture of the MD-11 (or was it a DC-10?)

Saw the movie on a CO flight from SEA-ANC. I too thought it was pretty good.

Check out 1963's "Come Fly With Me," sort of an early jet age version of "View From The Top," from the days flying was truly glamorous. The tagline was "The mile hi-larious story of three airline hostesses on a round-the-world manhunt!" .....

For those who can't relate to the '60s, check out the '80s raunchier version of the same thing, called "Stewardess School..."

IMHO I think "Come Fly With Me" is the best because you get aviation from a '60s perspective. In this film, the flight attendants are all pretty stewardesses, the destinations are all exciting European cities, the passengers are all well dressed and well behaved, and the pilots are all macho egomaniacs. Well, at least one thing hasn't changed! This is airline flying in the days before anyone had heard of women's lib, shoe bombers or Priceline, you didn't have to pay for your meal and if you got hijacked, it was just some wacko commie that wanted to go to Havana to smoke cigars with Castro. Seriously, whenever I see this movie coming on late at night, it's like hearing the boarding call at the Pan Am Worldport, makes me want to head out to Idlewild and have a martini at TWA's Lisbon Lounge.....Check it out sometime...

You should also try the venerable Airplane. I have seen that movie a bunch of times, and it never gets old and it still has me rolling on the floor laughing every single time.

Happy Holidays,

A View From The Top was an okay movie, but did it tank at the theaters.

Check out "Airplane", and old but hilarious film...it's a satire of the classic airline thriller...

Home Alone the original is a good one. Watch all the obvious mistakes, like the AM departure from ORD to Paris that then lands in the AM? Also the plane that lands in Paris is not the same as the one that took off from ORD.

Home for the Holidays, with Holly Hunter and Robert Downey Jr. is another good one, tho the Holiday is Thanksgiving it has some good airport/airplane footage as well.

InnocuousFox,
Did you like Pushing Tin or just the movie? I thought the plot could have used some work before filming. There was some good lines though.

I personally like "Three guys named Mike" 1957 b/w with Jane Wyman,Van Johnson. Chronicles quickly experiences of new AA F/A (Wyman) in various predicaments.
Based on book by AA F/A back then. A lot of AA shots. Same airport is :Chicago,Cleveland,Nashville, etc.
Probably not too readily available to rent, though.

The one where the 707 gets stuck in the snow on the tarmac. I think it was Airport 1975, or something similar. I think the actor who played the pilot was the same guy who "rode" that bomb like a bull from the belly of a military bomber a/c. . .whatever movie that was. Oh yeah, my memory is just winning me accolades tonite. . .oh well.

I liked Pushing Tin, but only for the obvious reasons to us, the story line was pretty dull though.

DIA, that was "Airport" from 1970. Airport '75 was Columbia Airlines flight 409,a 747,going IAD-LAX w/ wx divert to SLC vs. Beech Baron 232Z,although it was something else. It was enroute GUP-BOI w/ a wx/fuel stop at EKO.
I know what bomber movie you talk of, had Slim Pickins as PIC correct? Not sure of name, was somewhat like "Fail Safe".

In my oppinion "the" classic aviation-comedy movie would be "Airplane", now thats what i call a good movie!... I admit it can be a little cheezy in places but its all part of the fun....

Pushing Tin is a classic, i've got it on video and seen it a 100 times  Smile
Yeah the storyline is a little shallow but i love it for it's aviation content and humour mixed together. John Cusack is great as Nick Falzone and i love the rivalry between him and Billy Bob(forget the character name). Good shots of planes and the actual ATC bits are all pretty realistic.

Just saw VIEW FROM THE TOP this weekend and agree, it was cute, I think I liekd it especially since it kind of was set in the Hey Day of Aviation when it was glamourous, and yet was present day!

Also jsut saw Dwn With Love, which I do not think had aviation references but had that same swank flavor of the 1960's hey day of aviation.

View From the Top is entertainig, definately. Picked up a motivational line from that flick...Paltrow's character is disappointed because she doesnt know what she wants to be or how things are going to end up. Rob Lowe's character--pilot--comforts her. "How do you know?" she asks..."I'm a pilot. I'm supposed to know where people are going". ok, it may be an old line, but i've only been around for so long. i find it to be a nifty play on words right there.

I agree with Pushing Tin.

Besides, where else are you going to find Billy Bob Thornton, John Cusack, Cate Blanchett, and Angelina Jolie in the same movie?

Billy Bob Thornton is pretty funny. Angelina Jolie is pretty sexy.  Smile

I am a big fan of ATC (I've been on SATCO/VATSIM for 5 years) anyway so "Pushing Tin" was a natural. I also like John Cusack a lot and that roll was just perfect as "me".
