Where Have All The Airtran DC9's Gone?

Wed Dec 24, 2003 11:29 am

Anyone know where all the FL DC9's have gone? I know they donated a few, scrapped a few, and have 1 as a spare for the B7172BD.

MD11LuxuryLinr is correct. I have personally noted at least 6 or 7 of them at Opa Locka Airport (North Miami Florida) being parted out. It's tough for me to see any jets scrapped. I almost sense their own awareness they are through flying.

I just checked the latest census list really quick and it seems that a lot are stored in places like Opa Locka, Atlanta, even Salt Lake. Like Navion said.. probably never to fly again.

http://www.airlinerlist.com/

You download any aircraft list you want to to your computer in a ZIP file. DC9s are in the same files as the MD80 and 717..

I think you are all wrong.

Yes a few have been scrapped.

The rest have been purchased by NWA to replace the ARJ routes. NWA can get another 10 out of them.

We have about 5-6 moth balled at MCO right now. But from what I've heard they still have 1 spare set aside.

airdude66...funny..if ANYONE could get more life out of a DC-9 it would be NW.

As some at NW say...... when they park the Airbusses, the crew will fly home on a DC-9.

Well one of the FL -9's is at the OKC Metro Tech aviation center (along with a very old NW 727 shortbed, a couple of ex-USAF T-39's and some other civil piston types) for use in A&P training...the N number has been painted over so don't know which one....

Maybe NW will buy up the old Air Tran DC-9s instead of ordering those 717s an inside source tells me they are considering ordering soon.

Startvalve:

Glad to hear it, but you know how those inside sources are...

Spyglass:

Try asking one of the techs to get the S/N from the aircraft. Then you can look it up on the census list.

Almost all DC-9s are stored or sold. There are none in active service, just used as spares in case there are no 717s available. Last I had heard (and this is third-hand), only one '9 was still being used as a spare. The rest are parked.

Yes, it's true, there is only ONE AirTran DC9 still "standing ready" for flight. It leaves on the 28th....

Hey Travis, and everyone.

The last DC-9 will continue to fly until the first week of January, at least. One of our CRJ's (a/c 445) incurred ground damage in MIA at the hands of a contract tug driver. As a result, good old 949 has been flying an AirWis route for about two weeks and is slated to fly for at least one more. The usual routing has been:

2173 ATL-ICT
2174 ICT-ATL
2130 ATL-GSO
2129 GSO-ATL

However, today after it came back from ICT, it did a MEM turn due to crew issues. It received what will likely be its last A-Check ever last night.  Sad

My, how plans change. These aircraft were supposed to be retired and out of the fleet in Oct...

One was donated to the Virginia Air and Space Museum in Hampton, VA. It sits inside the museum, still with original first and economy seats. Some of the windows have flat-panel displays behind them for the FS 2002 simulator built-in. AFAIK, it landed at Langley AFB and was towed to the museum. Quite a sight to see.

I just flew on a AirTran DC-9-32 on FL #2184 from PNS to ATL on Saturday December 27. The flight originally was scheduled to be operated by a Canadair CL-600 Regional Jet operated by Air Wisconsin/AirTran Jet Connect, but was changed sometime earlier in the day. Opon exiting the aircraft in ATL, I glanced in the cockpit to find a registration on tail number since it was dark in ATL and all I could make out was '949.' Could it have been N849AT (prev. N949VV)?

I looked up 'N949AT' in the database and it belongs to a Boeing 717-2BD

I was thrilled to be flying on the DC-9 once again and the last time I got to fly on a DC-9 was on a Hawaiian Airlines DC-9-51 back in September of 2001.

Can anyone verify if N849AT was indeed the actual aircraft used as FL #2184 from PNS to ATL continuing on to SAV on 12/27? It would be greatly appreciated.

Ron -

Aircraft N849AT is AirTran's ship number 949 ("ship" or "fleet" numbers often differ from one another, and in fact, all differ at AirTran).

On the console of the flight decks of AirTran aircraft, you'll see placards that show the "ship" number.

As for whether N849AT (i.e. AirTran ship #949) was flying the route in question - since 949 is the last DC9 still working the skies in AirTran teal, there is a 100% probability that it operated your leg PNS-ATL on December 27. Unless of course there is a phantom nine out there, and was operated by the ghost of Christmas past (the ghost of Christmas future flies for Northwest).

There are at least 5 in storage at Lake City FLA waiting for disassembly along with an ex-US MD-82.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

Just to continue this thread and provide an update. Ship 949 (N849AT) is still going strong. Today it operates the same for AirWis flights: ATL-ICT-ATL-GSO-ATL. Last night, after its usual routing, it was scheduled to run an extra segment, Flight 2049, from ATL to MCO continuing to FLL. However, the front-end crew timed out and since we have so few DC-9 crews left, the extra section was run on a 717.

Latest update: final day of operation is January 5th with an ATL-MCO-ATL roundtrip (last revenue flight) followed by a ferry back to MCO.

I think that would make Airtran the youngest all Boeing fleet in the U.S. Three years ago they probably had the oldest fleet in the business. With an average age now of 38 months. Wouldn't Jetblue have the youngest Airbus fleet in the U.S.?

Are you sure FL735 and FL744 as being the last DC-9 flts, because it
is showing in Open Skies for these flights as a 717?

Check the crew; DC-9 pilots + lots of deadheading captains.

Simple answer:
if they are older than 20 years old, Northwest might have got them.
