Who Flies From The US To Africa?

Wed Dec 24, 2003 11:53 am

Other than SU to CAI, who flies from the US to Africa? I know WO was for a while from IAH and JFK to Banjul, I think.

South African...I'm sure they fly JFK - JNB, although I'm not sure about other routes.
I'd rather be flying.

Yes indeed...I forgot about them. They also fly from MIA to Capetown and JHB. I believe their JFK/JHB route is the longest in the world. Could be EWR/TYO. Anyone know?

Ghana Airways flies from BWI to Accra.

South African also flies Atlanta-Cape Town, if I recall correctly.

MIA-JNB/CPT was dropped for ATL-JNB/CPT, which is the longest flight.

World currently does ATL-LOS, JFK-LOS and IAH-LOS as well.

For now, the longest route in the world is CO's EWR-HKG.

Very soon (03FEB04), it will be SQ's non-stop LAX-SIN. Then a few months later, they will start non-stop JFK-SIN service.

The SIN-LAX flight will take 16 hours.
LAX-SIN will take 18 1/2 hours. (this flight is not for me !!!  Nuts)
The SIN-JFK and JFK-SIN flights will both take 18 hours.

The present Ghana Airways flights are BWI-JFK-ACC. The flights actually originate in the Washington area to serve the large Ghanaian population in Washington DC and Northern Virginia.

Until earlier this year, World Airways flew a once-a-week IAH-SID-LAD round trip, I would assume at the behest of the petroleum industry.

World Airways operates Luanda-Houston on Wednesdays and Fridays, Malabo-Houston on Sundays, and Lagos-Houston on Thursdays. The Luanda/Malabo flights are the Houston Express oil flights, while the Lagos run is a Rite Time charter operation, all with MD-11s.

If Trans Atlantic Airlines ever comes to be, we'll have 747 service to Banjul as well. Not a bad portfolio!

Voyager: "You say EWR-HKG is the longest route in the world. Is this nonstop ?"

Yes, it is a non-stop flight via the polar route.

CO99 / EWR-HKG / DEP: 12:15PM / ARR: 17:15PM / DUR: 16H00M / MIL 8,060

CO98 / HKG-EWR / DEP: 12:15PM / ARR: 14:34PM / DUR: 15H20M / MIL 8,060

This is currently the longest route in the world. As of 03FEB04, SQ will hold that title.

Kevin752, SA serves most of those cities only via its codeshare with DL. The only U.S. destinations where SA flies its own aircraft are JFK and ATL.

Last I checked, the ATL flights operated nonstop to JNB and CPT, and returned with a stop in SID. The JFK flight has generally operated nonstop to JNB, sometimes (once weekly at most) via SID, and has always required a stop at SID on the return. In addition, SA operates a JFK-DKR-JNB (and return) service.

However, I seem to remember reading that the JFK schedule would be changed, with the introduction of the A346, as follows: JFK-JNB nonstop some days, JFK-DKR-JNB other days, and on the return JNB-DKR-JFK daily, thus eliminating the SID stop on the JFK route.

Please, people, please:

Most of us have no idea what airports you are referring to when you say CMN, SID, or TYO. Until the A.net people update the airport code database for mouse-overs (which they are doing now), could you please provide us with the airport names?

Many thanks.

SSides....I agree with you. CMN is Casablanca (White-house), Morocco, SID is Sal, Cabo Verde or Cape Verde, and TYO is Tokyo, Japan. Anyone know a link to pull codes?

Ssides,

Sorry. ACC is Accra, Ghana -- half of whose expatriates now live or read for degrees in the US. SID is Sal, one of the 11 Cape Verde islands and the republic's only international airport. LAD is Luanda Angola, home to extensive Shell Petroleum drilling.

If you go to the http://www.airportcitycodes.com web site, you will be able to track down some of the elusive ones.  Smile

Don't forget that Kenya Airways will also be starting Kenya-USA non-stops soon. They originally optioned 767-400's for US services but have recently indicated that they are taking three 777-200ER's instead.

Could anyone shed some light on the South African 733 I saw at FLL (Fort Lauderdale)a while back (a year ago) as I sat on a DL 737 departing for DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL (Hartford/Springfield)? Was it scheduled? Charter? Diversion?

Also, coolest African flights I ever saw was weekly BOS-SID (Boston-Sal) flights via TACV utilizing LAM DC-10s.

Air France used to operate an Air Gabon 747 (leased by or from?) on occasion on BOS-CDG flights.

SA212: Atlanta/Johannesburg (South African Airways) - This flight is 8439miles. To my knowledge, this is currently the longest nonstop flight (mileage) in the world. It is therefore longer than EWR-HKG.

FoxBravo

All JFK-bounded flights, from Johannesburg, have been stopping over in Dakar, instead of SAL Island (SID) from 01 October 2003.
On the return, SA202 flies 4x a week nonstop from JFK to Johannesburg. SA204 goes out 3x a week from JFK to Johannesburg, with a stopover in Dakar

Both SAA destinations in the USA (Atlanta and JFK) will be serviced with the new A346, from early in 2004. It seems as if ATL will be receiving the A346 from 01 January 2004 and JFK from 09 February 2004.

Errr. Wrong. Longest of ATL-JNB, operated one way non-stop.

South African Airways does in indeed every night fly from JFk and Atlanta to JNB and sometimes the Atlanta flight first goes to Cape Town.

They are currently using 744 on those flights but in February they will use a 346 to Atlanta the new york flight will use a 346 a few months later.

SAA's 6th and 7th A340-600 delivery dates from Airbus have been delayed for some reason. ZS-SNF was supposed to arrive on 20 Dec and ZS-SNG on 30 Dec, don't know the new arrival dates.

It looks like A346's will only commence services to ATL on 30 Jan and not 01 Jan now.
