Aviation Industry From 1903-1915

Wed Dec 24, 2003 4:41 pm

Hello everyone,

With all this centennial of flight hoopla, It came to my attention that I knew a whole lot already about the Wright Brothers, Samuel Langley, Lillienthal (spelling?) from the late 1890's through 1903. However, I never really read or learned about the years after the first flight. I read a very interesting article in Flying magazine about the legal disputes between the Wrights and, for example, Curtiss, and how it led the United States to lose its early dominance in aviation due to the endless bickering over controlled flight patents. This was very interesting to me, and I would like to learn more about this time period in aviation history. If I can make a strong thesis regarding the Wright's actually contributing to the degradation as well as the start of the American aeronautical industry, it would make a very good paper and documentary for school.

I was wondering if there are any good references that I could start with which focus on or cover this period in history. Also, it would be interesting to find out how foreign aircraft designers took advantage of these setbacks in America to further their own industries. Any help or discussion would be great!

Best regards, and Happy Holidays,
