Best Paint Scheme For The 747?

Fri Dec 26, 2003 9:09 am

The Boeing 747 is one of the most graceful giants in the sky. It looks good in almost any livery in my opinion. If you had to choose one livery for the 747, which airline would you choose? Merry Christmas.

I don't know if I can stick with just one! Narrowing it down the best I can, I'd have to say:

China Airlines and Northwest (old livery)

Virgin Atlantic (current livery) and Iberia

There are many others that strike me as beautiful on a 747 of any series, but those stand out to me. Of course, ask me tomorrow and I may have a different opinion!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Maybe it's just me, and I may be biased because I work for the airline... but..

I think the 747 with the best paint colors was UAL. (The white with Red & Blue insignia) .. Although since they have painted too the blue that we see today, I dont like it ...

Just my Two cents !

I really like how the actual Virgin Atlantic livery looks on their 747-400s.

I was also truly biased towards the looks of the 747-400s in BA's World Tails. I loved the Chelsea Rose and the Ndebele Emmly/Matha schemes. The Union Jack doesn't look bad at all though.

But, in general, I think that almost any livery looks well on the 747-400. Although I do prefer the 747-400 way over the 747-200 aesthetically.

I have to agree with Goose.

The final short-lived Canadian (see above) is hands down my pick for best paint scheme on a 747. Stellar!

I like the current VS livery on their 747-400's.  Big thumbs up

However, the older livery on their 744's was nothing to write home about:

I remember seeing a 747, I believe it was a 744 and it was a Formula One special (red Formula One car on the side). And I am pretty sure it was a Qantas plane. I wish I could remember where I saw that photograph. Probably on A.net somewhere.

The Qantas Wunala Dreaming livery I would say is the current best special scheme with Ndizani from SAA a close second (reminds me of old BI Calder colors).

Of the vintage schemes, BI's pumpkin planes were always nice for being that large and that orange. But, the vintage CO colors on their short lived 747 fleet also looked very nice with the gold tails.

Of the current airlines out there and their normal paint schemes, KLM's blue bodied 747s always make me grin a little when I see them. They are a nice change from the fleets of white airplanes these days.

Certainly the 747 seems to have natural beauty, considering all the different liveries and varying opinions. Wow. Maybe I'll have to ask myself this question again. Thanks guys.

But...QF's standard scheme is a timeless classic. it WAS a timeless classic, as well. Who woulda thought red and white could be so...so...hmm can't think of a word . And with a hint of gold from the 80s, I would think it's a bit guady. Not at all!

I think this is the most boring colour scheme you can get. They haven't changed it for ages and ages and i think they should. The Wunala Dreaming livery is ok- and i think there is another pruple livery on one of their 747-300's which is ok too but the standard livery i don't care for much at all.

Best 747 liveries:

American Airlines
United Airlines(1980's livery)
Avianca
Northwest Airlines(old livery)
Ansett Australia
TWA
People Express
Air Canada

Most of my favorites are already mentioned.. Virgin Atlantic, NWA, British Airways & Saudia... but I'd also add these to my list

Old;

Alliance Air & SAS - both with unique designs & represented their regions with good symbolism

TWA & BOAC - both of which were the epitome of international airlines of a generation

Air New Zealand & CP Air- both of which had good colours and just looked nice.

New;

KLM & Emirates - both of which have a fresh look, striking and eye catching

Malaysia - I just like this look.. again nice colour combination and with the logo it looks very South Pacific and tropical

..was this big black nosed Air Canada 747.. it just looked so cool from the front and I was very disappointed when they got rid of the black paint.. it seems an era had come and gone and it's replacement has never quite been the same...
