Daytona Beach International Service

Sat Dec 27, 2003 5:39 am

Can anyone tell me if DAB is looking at getting any intl flights? I know LTU was flying in there for a while, I think it was a RSW/DAB/DUS flight. Seems like they built a great new terminal, which is barely used.

It would be great for DAB to have ANY additional service, as to my knowledge the only commercial service is DL a few times a day and the daily CO ERJ from EWR. Would be nice if nothing else to get the fares down. The problem I think is DAB is not far from CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO and even closer to SFB (with alot of the European charters), so the overall area is already considered to be well-serviced. Any thoughts?

Really Daytona Beach is so easy to get to there are only three times a year thaty they need an Interational Airport. The Daytona 500 in Feb, Spring Break, and the 4th of July race at Daytona. Otherwise it's a short drive from Orlando.

I believe CO JetExpress has added DAB out of CLE, not sure if it is year round , I would think most likely seasonal service.

For people actually beginning or ending their trip in the Daytona area, it would be nice to avoid the "mouse crowds" over in Orlando, but I guess there aren't enough of us the justify someone putting on more mainline service or an LCC coming in.

Flair- I think the DL MD-80s from ATL are the only mainline service, but might be wrong...

It's a shame for me to see how DAB has fallen over the years. Back when I was a Riddle student in the early 80's, DAB was still operating out of the old terminal, and we had Delta, Eastern, Piedmont, PBA, and Dolphin.

Delta usually ran 4 mainline flights a day to ATL, usually 727's and DC-9's. Eastern operated 727's and DC-9's to ATL, JFK, JAX, MCO, MIA, DCA (I might have missed one). During my first semester, Piedmont started service (a friend and I actually walked over to the termnal for the inaugural) to MCO, then added CLT and JAX. I've forgotten where PBA and Dolphin flew in FL, but they operated Banderiente's.

DAB is unfortunate enough to be located in MCO's shadow. Fares have always been higher at DAB than at MCO, and at the time, MCO wasn't tough to get to. In fact, a shuttle bus company used to operate at DAB from an office located on Midway Avenue behind turn 3 at the speedway. I believe it was called DOTS (Daytona-Orlando Transportation Service), and I took them once or twice up from MCO to DAB.

Tom- thanks for the interesting historical perspective, had no idea DAB used to be so well-served. I guess the downside of the mega-airport (eg MCO)trend is it potentially puts smaller airports like DAB out of business, if they aren't closer to the regional 'main event' (eg the theme parks)...

In the late Eighties-Early Nineties CO ran three daily 727s from EWR to Daytona Beach, some of the flights continued on to Melbourne.

Today COEX had two daily ERJ-145 flights EWR-DAB.

Since Ak apparently works for JetBlue, anyone here think they might do well to put a -190 (when they get them) on JFK-DAB? Despite all the NYers in Florida, the CO ERJs out of Newark are the only nonstops from the NY area to DAB.

I go to Riddle. I don't know this for a fact, but I have heard that it is simply cheaper for Int'l flights to go to SFB and have the tourists bussed to Daytona.

DOTS is still in existence. I may have to take them back to Daytona here in January.

Continental Express does fly to Daytona in addition to Delta. CoEx flies to EWR as well as CLE (CLE service started on the 17th of Dec) EWR service used to be with a 737, but DAB service was dropped after 9/11. It restarted with an ERJ in Dec 2002.

Technically, DAB does get int'l service from Vintage Props and Jets in their KingAir because they fly to the Bahamas. I have seen them at the int'l terminal on more than one occasion.

I used to go to Embry-Diddle as well......probably the worst school in the country ....anyway I also worked for ITS , a contract company that does the underwing work for Delta and DC. According to the people at Delta that have worked there for eons, the Int'l service was only charters and that International facility has been dormant for years. They maybe wrong..just throwing my two cents in..

I should think that DAB could sustain additional service were there carriers that were willing to offer competitive fares. I'd like to see US Express offer RJ service to CLT, I think the DAB-ATL market is a good fit for Air Tran Connection, and I don't see why, when JB's -190's come on line, a JFK service wouldn't work, as well.

I'd also like some westbound service, as well. DFW and IAH would be first, but I'm probably dreaming with that one. Although, I think for a time one of DL's regionals offered an RJ service to DFW (don't know how often).

As for international service, I don't see it, not with MCO so close, and the charters that serve Sanford.

BTW, is the old baggage claim area/PI ticket counter area still utilized as the Customs/Immigration building?

What ever happened to that TAB Express or whatever that was that was supposed to operate those Beech 1900s out of DAB that you see advertisements for on I-4 between Sanford area and Daytona?

Two services no one has mentioned:

Continental Connection, 3x daily to Tampa (this an MIA-APF started about two weeks ago)

Delta Connection, weekend service to Dallas (2 flights on Sa, one on Su)

No, DAB only gets two carriers. DL and CO. They have an awesome terminal with not a lot of service. DL brings in 767's and 757's during raceweek. That's it folks DAB gets nothing else. It's only around an hour or so from CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO, so all the freighters go into there.

Since I live right around the corner from the airport I can almost address this topic adequately. There are 2 ERJ flights daily to EWR on CO as well as 6 flights to ATL (2 RJs and 4 MD-80s) offered by DL, weekend service to DFW on DL (SkyWest CRJ), 1 flight to CVG on DL Connection (Comair), and the new seasonal service to CLE (once daily on a COEx ERJ) and 3 daily flights on CO Connection (Cape Air) to TPA.

that being said, AC has added its Jazz service direct from Toronto once daily on Sat and Sun. TAB Express should be coming on line shortly with their B1900s. When I first came to Embry-Riddle it was the occasional MD-80 from ATL, maybe 1 or 2 CRJ's from ATL or CIN and a CO Connection (Gulf Air I believe) B1900 from TPA. In a little less than a year and a half the service has grown to what you see above. In my opinion the airlines are finally starting to have a little more faith in the DAB community wanting to fly from here instead of trekking it up to CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO.

All this leads me to a question. Is DAB primed to have an LCC based there? If the fares can compete (and maybe be a little lower) than those at CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO will people be willing to take a ride from DAB to their endpoint much like the DAB community is doing from CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO now?

thanks for the replies. And if you want to check out the DAB schedule first hand here is the link: http://www.flydaytonafirst.com/schedule.htm

This is a bit off-topic, but in relation to KMLB. What's the schedule like there for DL? And, also, are any of those flights subsidized by the USAF, as Patrick AFB is right down the street? Similar is Inyokern/Ridgecrest, CA (KIYK) on SkyWest (UAEX). The USN subsidizes the service to facilitate personnel support activities. The flights depart, even if the aircraft is completely empty. I've only flown in and out of MCO and TPA.

I am surpised Southwest didn't start ops at DAB so they have quick turnaround times(not saying they are bad at MCO) but you know it might be eaiser and its close to MCO.

I think it's kinda funny that when they had their old terminal, the airport was booming. When the new terminal was built, everyone left!

During the early 90's, DAB hosted Eastern, Continental, Delta, Pan Am Express, Comair, American, Presidential, Piedmont/USAir...there may have been a couple more. Midway Airlines was going to fly between PHL and DAB with DC-9-10's until they went under.

During the Spring, DAB hosted a couple of international charters like LTU, Intair and Canadian.

Every once in a while, we saw weird charters like Carnival Airlines 737-200's and Rich International L-1011's.

I flew in and out of DAB quite a bit while I was in college...bouncing back and forth between USAir and Delta. I kinda miss the old terminal.

Guys...............
I worked at DAB while putting in my time at ERAU(don't do it!!!!). I worked CO 727s to EWR once a day(it went to MLB also). DL had 737s, 727s, MD-88s and for one week(race week) 757s and one 767(charter). Canadien flew in with 737-200s that continued on to PIE. LTU called with L-1011-500 routing DL), Germany">DUS-DAB-ADZ(San Andres, Colombia) and later went to the MD-11 and 767-300ER routing DL), Germany">DUS-DAB-MIA. ComAir went to CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO with Metros and EMB-120s and AirNova would fly a BAe-146 down from Halifax(I think) during the winter months on charters(stopped in MYR for fuel). When I left, AirTransa was flying YUL-CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO-DAB with 757s and L1011s but this didn't last for long. USAir also left(737s) as did Gulfstream(B1900C).
S
Oh yeah.......we occasionally got CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO weather diversions(Kiwi 727s, Sun Country DC-10s, JetTrain DC-9, Virgin 767-300ER leased from Martinair).

OK folks......for those who have never been to DAB. I suggest that you don't. There is nothing there. The only exciting things happen in the spring and February. DAB is so close to MCO it would be dumb for anyone else to come there. There is a strong enough demand to have the MadDogs and some RJ's with Riddle brats and that's it.

Miss Piedmont,

Im sorry that you are all gung ho for ERAU. I thought it was a lowsy school, and as for cutting it give me a break. That school is a joke. The instructors are jokes and etc. I left after two years to get out of DAB , not because I couldn't cut, but to get out of that hell hole. I suggest you watch your mouth before shooting it off.

Yea guys-DAB is not what it used to be and it really has a double-edge sword in a way because JAX is also right up 95 and not too far either although not as close as MCO. Location, Location, Location. Same thing with VPS, PNS is just down the road. Smile
