"LiarAir" hits the public scenes again...

10M USD initial investment? 10M USD initial investment sounds far fetched. They've cancelled leases on an MD83, and 2 Airbus A310s, and now plans to go for 60 aircraft! Everyone (including the govt. now) is asking how much is the real investment for the airline, and independent analysts have said that Rusdy Kirana and his group could not afford such a figure.

Their Dash8 subsidiary Wings, is going out! They've pulled out of Jakarta after being defeated by Merpati and Deraya... funnily enough, their ticket office says... "Our services to Bandung, Cilacap and Lampung have been suspended indefinitely due to maintenance".

3 aircraft, 1 blew an engine in Manado and Wings is having a dispute on the maintenance fees (Lion is saying... An ACMI means if we blow the engine, you pay the maintenance... the lessors are saying... "read the contract again!").

Medan - India = Stretching it on the MD82... they will probably do something similar to what they do on the Jakarta-Manado direct route... which many have alleged, they "cooked" the log book and load sheets... Complying with Reserves requirement are now under investigations by the CAA.

Lion says they have 18 aircraft... Initially they announced they wanted a fleet of 30 by the end of first quarter 2004 and 60 by the year end.

This is because they are now not allowed to extend contracts for the foreign pilots. How will they get the crew domestically for this? Many experienced pilots are avoiding working with Lion.

Plus their foreign pilots have caused huge rows. Once One MD82 parked across 3 stands in Jogjakarta because the airline didn't have cash to pay for the pushback truck! Another would cut a downwind to be ahead of traffic. Another have left with paperwork incomplete so they can flyoff in front of a Garuda aircraft, to keep up their on time performance and caused an enroute delay for the Garuda jet.

A few hotels in Ujung Pandang have been left debts caused by Lion not paying for their crew overnighting.

Pekanbaru Airport had to bring in troops to Lion's Station there and chains to the aircraft for the airline to pay their outstanding debts... They've sold off confirmed seats to standby 3hrs before departures, and then paid off some guy with a kid (who's not an infant) to sit on his lap so they can seat the person with the confirmed ticket whose seat was sold 3hrs earlier. They've sold tickets on board, ie allowing a non ticketed passenger to sit in the aircraft...

The list goes on and on... Maintenance, fuel reserves, pilot qualifications (imagine going on a dash8 flight deck in the air and finding there are no Captains!), cabin crew training and qualifications etc etc etc...

Yes, imagine taking off on a FULL MD82 and finding out there are 12 (yes TWELVE) cabin crews serving the flight!!!! Now, where did they sit during take off?

The Lion Game continues...

Suddenly, everybody wants to fly to and from India.

Interim, I was in holding pattern outside DEL for 40 minutes earlier today, ay non-peak noon, due to congestion.

The Lion Air story is indeed shady at best, albeit supported by a magnificent public relations machine. Without these strenuous efforts of projecting the company as a much brighter light than it really is, Lion would probably not be around anymore.

Meanwhile a lot of questions, many of which Mandala499 brought up above, remain unanswered, and the company is an Indonesian Airlines-in-waiting...

PR Machine, current or former senior members of the CAA/DGAC on their board of directors, hush money... it's all in "the Game"... unfortunate.

I and many down here who have heard what goes on behind the scenes think this is worse than an Indonesian Airlines-in-waiting... it's a potential AWAir! Some would go as far as saying this is a Valujet waiting to happen! Some have called it Indonesia's Ryanair gone haywire... The names goes on and on...

In the mean time, all the pax care about is cheap tickets and lots of pretty girls serving the flight... YES, they use "sex image" that for marketing to travel agents (where the travel agents would get some free tickets for their managers...) When Lion first started, this was what a few Lion marketing agents have told me! They even gave my travel agency blank tickets with no friggin' deposits required and told me to go and use one free ticket to see their girls on board! NUTS!

However, they can't get enough pretty girls to fly for Lion (as many have gone to other airlines, experienced or newbies), so Lion have now opened it's own Flight Attendant School, some are worried that the girls graduate as juniors whose contracts will be extended until they get prettier girls coming in! Crazy? Welcome to Lion! Big grin

This is their "nasty" PR Machine... the average male would keep flying on Lion because of cheap tickets and pretty gals. While there's nothing wrong with that on the surface, I have a few colleagues who know the safety risks in Lion, and still fly them, not for the cheap tickets, but for the pretty gals... Bizarre eh?

Geez, is it me or do I seem to always rant about Lion whenever the opportunity comes up?
