777-100X Revived To Counter A330 At SQ

Thu Jan 13, 2000 7:49 pm

Remember the 777-100X???

Well, Boeing have introduced it again to Singpaore Airlines to counter the a possible order forr A330s!!

My bet will go to Boeing, since there will be no commonality with the entire SQ fleet once the A340-300 goes, but then, after a few years time, the A340-500 joins the fleet, so i see the A330 and 7771X, two competiting types are equally attrative.

but anyone has any general data on the 777-100X???

Do you guys think Boeing is getting a little bit confused here, competition have wierd effects I guess: the 771 is supposed to carry 250 passengers....what was than the point of producing the B767-400???? Boeing is litterally going to create competition in itself. The A330-200 is perfect for SQ's need, it gives a slight capacity increase over the A310s, creates communality with the A340-300 whose pilots can easily switch to the type and tides well with the upcoming A345. I have the impression that the 771 will be a little heavy for its purpose and thus prove to be uneconomical.

But the A330 doesn't have 4 engines does it?? The 777-100 has two engines slightly underrated from the -200, but also has two emergency engines in the rear that take the place of an APU. These pop out of the fuselage when ordered and can create up to 15,000 lbs or thrust. SQ hasn't liked the A-340 and recent problems with the A-340-500 & -600 development are likely to push the delivery date back.

But about the fleet communality, do you remember that SQ had got orders for 77 777 aircrafts? That's is even more common!

RE: Boeing Competing With Itself

It's not really competing with itself, as both aircraft are designed for different purposes. The 777-X has an ENORMOUSLY long range, while the 767-400 can fly 10-11 hr. flights, and that's the max.

To put it into perspective: Boeing makes the 757-200 seating 188 pax. Boeing also makes the MD-11C which also seats 188 pax.--there's no competition there...

The B771X has "two emergency engines that take the place of the APU"...

Fot the wuck?

GoA340 is (almost) right - the B771X is too heavy for an A310 replacement, but obviously SIA doesn't just want an A310 replacement - it wants to fly the airplane on long intercontinental routes.

The A330-200 also isn't the perfect airplane for SIA. If it was the airline would have ordered it by now. It is not happy with either the A330-200 or B767-400ER. And, the reasons why SIA isn't happy with these two airplanes is probably the same reasons why it won't like the B771X, either, even though the airline has been pushing for this airframe since 1996.

Than there is some confusion here....some of you are right to say that the 771 and 332 are not competing because of their range but I thought SQ was shopping for a A310 replacement. You can bet they wont by the 763 and will only do so if a new 763 is produced by shrinking the 764 and thus getting similar avionics to the 777. I think eventually SQ will buy yhe 332 just because it is the most comfortable 250 seater out thereand the most natural A310 replacement. In any case I think SQ is just behaving as if they are the most precious think in the airline industry. If they dont like the 771 or the 332, that is fine, other people will buy these planes anyway! (AA for example which would love the idea of having frequent 771 flights to ultra long haul destinations.)
