Airtran 717 Options?

Sat Dec 27, 2003 7:33 pm

Has Airtran still some options on the 717 left, and if so, when will they change them into firm orders?
Thanks

Thats a good question, it all depends on how much they enjoy the 737's. I could be wrong though.

AirTran has been very successful at getting really good deals on slightly used 717s. Only 41 or so of the current fleet of 73 has been delivered new from Boeing with the remainder previously operated by TWAA or intended for VuelaMex. Hawaaian ships start coming next month and there is always talk that we'll eventually get some or all of Midwest's and/or QantasLink's fleet. This has all been great for AirTran but has obviously not helped Boeing's orderbook.
I work for Southwest, but the views expressed are my own and do not necessarily represent those of Southwest.

The options for the 717 will be converted to 73G.

Greg:

How do you know that?

None of us knows what FL is planning on doing...

However, if someone doesn't order soon, I fear for the Long Beach commercial line...

they do have a new order for 10 717s on the books. it was announced when the 737NG order was announced, and is still mentioned in the "company information" section of their website

As the passenger numbers increase, the 717 becomes less useful for them (less seats=less revenue)...particularly at ATL where slots are getting harder to come by.

It would make more sense to have the larger planes since frequency will become an issue in the not so distant future.

I imagine Boeing will make it worth it for them to switch...

All the original options that Airtran had(50 firm with 50 options) are all gone. They gave some up when Boeing refinanced their debt back in 2000. Then they gave little more when they negotiated the TWA birds. And then finally the options that were left were all given back when Airtran bought 737s. By the end of the month they will have 73 717s. That is all that is left from the original orders. Any 717s they get next year will be from the new orders/options.

You have to remember that Airtran got a great deal for those airplanes. Some of those 717s were bought at ERJ/CRJ prices. The 717s they get next year are at prices no where near what they originally got them for. If you want more info its at there website in SEC filings I think in 10q's.
