I flew on Tu154M and il62M with CSA between PRG and CDG.
The il62 is just the best !! An incredible plane.

I like also the il96M, it looks like an A346...

The Antonov An-12 is also a great prop, but the classic and classy il18 is just amazing.

I think it has to be the Tu154 as far as popularity is concerned.

It has to be the Il-86!

I flew on this beast back in 1998! I loved the experience and would do it again anytime!

SA006, the Tu-134 is a twin jet. The Tu-154 is a tri Jet.  Smile

Concerning the most "modern" Russian airliner, I would say the Tu-204 or Tu-334 rather than the IL86/96.

By the way, are you sure that all theses a/c are "Russian" ? they were Soviet for sure, but I think that one or two for those famous manufacturer are now Ukrainian (Illyushin, or Yakovlev ??? )

FLYSSC,

you are right, it's hard to say that Tu-134 or smth. is Russian, since the production line of almost all old Soviet and current C.I.S. aircrafts was (and is) not localized in one country. E.g., Tu-334 is assembled in Ukraine and An-124 in Russia. But if you mean design bureaus, then almost all of major bureaus (except Antonov) are situated in Russia.

TU 134 without doubt!!!!

Glass noise, loud militar engine, strong gear: it's semms to be a other times plane.
I've seen it many times in Genoa, for charter flights to Saint Petersbourg and Moscow.

My vote goes to IL-96 and Tu-154..

Love the unique sound of the Tu-154 on short finals..

I have never flown on a Russian airliner. I do quite like the look of the TU-154. I have never flown on a B727 and that is something quite hard to do these days so the TU-154 is probably the best I can get. I have had friends fly on them to the holiday resorts of Bulgaria and they say it was a great ride and would do it gain.

Oke Antonov is a Ukrainian company but most of its Aircraft are made in the Russian periode.

So my vote will go to the AN22:

And also the AN124 is a really nice aircraft to see:

Someone I know used to be a pilot for Aeroflot years ago. He flew as a captain on An-24, TU-154, IL-62 and YAK-40. According to him, from the pilot's point of view, An-24 and IL-62 are two of the best planes that he flew. They are both very responsive to the pilot's commands. AN-24 is easier to control though because it's much smaller than IL-62. He said that when you land an IL-62, you have to lower nose immediately in order to apply the brakes and be able to stop it on the runway. AN-24 is easier because it is much lighter and requires less room to stop.
A mile of runway takes you to the world. A mile of highway takes you a mile.

But the only one that looks "reliable" for me is the Ilyushin II-86:

FIRST IS Tu-134!! Awesome airplane. I love the glass nose and the gear fairings. The airbrake is between the wings. And the engines sound completely awesome(and loud). I love the high-pitched whine when it taxies but when it starts taking off towards you you hear this deep roar and you can't mistake it for anything else. Love the way it smokes...probably the only jet that smokes so much left flying. What a great plane. Imagine what this photographer must've felt like after it passed over.

Second would have to be the Tu-154B with the NK-8 engines. My favorite prop is the An-22.

The IL-62, i remember during the cold war days when aeroflot,LOT,and interflug all flew them into JFK, my favorite were the CSA,OK jets. I still see the occasional Cubana IL-62, at CUN.
the rumble of round engines is like music to me,likewise the thunder of thr JT8D

My first ever flight was on a IL-86 (BEY-SVO) and I loved it. Later I flew many times on Tu-154s, Tu-134s, IL-18s, IL-62s and IL-86s. They all are very good and I hope I'll get the chance of flying in one of those again.

The Tu-154 feels very similar to the MD-80 and B727. Can't really tell which one of the 3 is the best. They're all good.

Probably my favorite Soviet airliner is the IL-86. It really feels more spacious than the Airbus widebodies and the 747.

TheNoFlyZone,

I've flown on that Armenian IL-86 when it was first delivered back in 1990. It was so clean and the blue gitane seats looked really nice. Too bad that both Armenian IL-86s will be grounded in a few weeks time.

All the best.

I think the Soviet-era jet airliner that proved to be the most popular was the Tu-154 series. That plane served with many airlines and is still around in yeoman service in the former Soviet Union.

If it weren't for the Soviet Union collapsing most of those Tu-154's would have been replaced by Tu-204's.
