KLM's Phuket 743 Heading To The Desert

Sun Dec 28, 2003 8:10 am

Today at MSP, we had the Phuket Air 743 come by for a fuel stop on its way to GYR (Goodyear, AZ). Its flight plan was filed by KLM, so I am assuming that it will not ultimately end up with Phuket. Just a little FYI for you. Happy New Year.

Just like the SIA 743s destined for African Star that was painted and never delivered. And the Indonesian Airlines 743 currently collecting dust at Jakarta...

The list goes on...

It looks like Phuket is having second thoughts about getting this plane or they've decided to delay delivery of the aircraft. The aircraft in question is PH-BUU, which was painted in November of 2003 to Phuket Air colors. You can see the photos of the aircraft on airliners.net. The plane looked pretty beat up back before it was painted and the #3 engine was put back on.

Alright, I posted a little too soon. However, I found more info. on this plane.

The plane was intended for Phuket Air but has instead been returned to the lessor, ILFC (reason: unknown). Two of KLM's Boeing 747-300s did go to Phuket Air, however, their regs are PH-BUM and PH-BUO.

Hope you MSP photographers got some photos today because who knows what will happen to PH-BUU. I hope she sees airline service again.

I saw a Phuket Air 743 at BKK airport on Christmas Eve, and another white tailed 743 ex-KLM on the tarmac too. Perhaps these are the 2 PH-BUM and PH-BUO you're talking about?

PH-BUU is owned by ILFC. PH-BUM and PH-BUO are (where) owned by KLM. The bank did not want to finance the BUU so Phuket decided to buy directly from KLM. I don't know why the bank won't finance the ILFC plane, maybe their terms where less favourable?

Pilottim747,

When, in your initial post, you say that the plane looked pretty beat up, note that in that picture, the plane has just been stripped of its paint, before going in for a repaint. So the 'beat up' look is because of the paint having been stripped. To compare, here's a picture of the same plane less than 2 months prior:

Scorpio,
It is actually nice when you can learn something on here. Thanks for the info on the paint.  Smile

I saw three of them already in Bangkok International airport. Two of them are being painted.

The two ex-KLM B747-200SUDs already delivered to Phuket Air are HS-VAA which received white Phuket Air titles and tail logo and operated a haj flight on 26 Dec 2003, and HS-VAV which was receiving her white Phuket Air titles on 27 Dec.

There is also a Boeing 747-200B registered HS-VAK painted all white with Phuket Air titles and tail logo. Can anyone tell where this came from? This was sighted on 27 Dec 2003 at BKK Airport.
