Qantas, Captain Koala And The 1980's.

Sun Dec 28, 2003 4:24 pm

I just saw this show in NYC called The Boy from Oz, about Peter Allen, an Australian born actor/songwriter.

But long story made short, in one set on the scene, in his living room, there was a poster up of a Koala Bear wearing what looked like a captain's hat and it said, "Captain Koala." Was that an Old Qantas Advertisement perhaps?

On another poster, it showed Qantas Livery on the tail of a plane with what looked like the a red winglet just in front of it, suggesting it was the photo of a QF 747-400. looked similar to the following...

How long has the 747-400 been around? This part of the movie takes place in the 80's so I assume it was a time error? Also, in the same poster, was what looked like a Oneworld Emblem. How long they been around? (Gosh, I am turning into an ANAL aviation geek methinks! Big thumbs up)

Hey,

QF got their first 744 in 1989, oneworld was formed in 1999.

My only guess is QF may be a sponsor?

Mirrodie,

You must have had good seats to pick that up!

Yes Qantas is a major sponsor of the show. Qantas has used Peter Allens "I Still Call Australia Home" which was performed in the show as their primary marketing campaign now for many many years.

So what did you think of the show and Hugh Jackman Mirrodie? When I saw it I wondered what an American would think of it as Peter Allen was not that well known in the States from what I understand.

Regards & happy New Year

The 747-400 has actually been around since 1988 and QANTAS got their first in 1989 so they were certainly around in the 80's.

QANTASpower, we were first row in the balcony. I love it there as it affords a great view with no one ahead of you!
But I'll start a thread in Non-av where we can discuss the show itself!

Only used KOALA BEAR as that is how they are referred to sometimes. WE know that aren't bears.

Any word though on the Captain Koala? Is that a reference to aviation?

In the US market, QF used a koala (with a grumpy voiceover- koalas don't talk by the way- you have to explain EVERYTHING to some people in this forum) to promote the airline.
Commercials usually ended with the line "I hate Qantas". The joke was QF would bring planeloads of tourists to Australia and the koala would get too many visits in the zoo, etc. I used to have a QF calendar and one picture was of the koala with a QF captain's hat.
However, my understanding is koalas weren't used in the Aussie market. I once saw some Channel 10 "worlds best/worst/sexiest/irrelevant commercials/momments/home videos" special with a talentless Daddo, and low and behold, there was a spot about Americans referring to koalas as promoters for QF. The Aussies didn't understand the reference (and Daddo neglected to fill them in) so they laughed at the yanks.

"koalas don't talk by the way"

Ever heard of Blinky Bill? That's just what we tell the tourists so they don't kidnap them.
