Favourite Turboprops Anyone?

Mon Dec 29, 2003 11:33 am

Just interested in everyone's turboprop thoughts - sorry if this has been covered before.
I know the Q400 has had some problems, but have they been ironed out? Are the other Q's working out?
The ATR seems like an old dog, but maybe it is just plugging away.
Thanks,

Dash 8

I worked on a Dash 8-300 as a F/A, and now I work on an ATR 42 -300.

I like the the Dash 8 better but just slightly. I imagine the Q series being even better.
The ATR is good, but the set up of cargo-hold in front and main entrance and F/A seat in the back was its draw-back (for me). And the aircon. works not to well and we fly in the tropics. The Dash's was better.

About the other turboprops like the Fokker 50, Embraer 120, BAe ATP, etc I do not know nothing about.

I've flown on ANZ and Origin Pacific ATR-72s, a Scenic Airlines Beechcraft 1900C, and a UAL EMB-120. Out of all of those, I'd say the ATRs were the most comfortable -- leather seats, not to old...the EMB-120 was pretty old and creaky, but fine...the 1900 was by far the worst: old-ish, really small windows, hot...
All that is just my opinion, though...

SAAB 340 hands down. Well built, easy to work on and fly, 6'-0" stand up headroom. It's no speed demon, but I'll take it over anything else out there.....except the SAAB 2000.....jet speed, turboprop fuel econemy..!!

My best turboprop aircraft to this date is the Dash 7. I miss those old birds and how they just float in the air.

In terms of the new generation turboprops, I would have to go with the Q400's. That's one roomy aircraft!

My favorite

Aspen Airline's Convair 580's.

I flew from Denver to Aspen over 20 times. The flight attendent was seated on every one of those flights. Definatily an E ticket ride each time. I still have their luggage tag on my ski bag.

I've flown on Air New Zealand's ATR72-500, Saab340A,Beech1900D and Origin Pacific's BAe Jetstream41.
Out of that short list of flown turboprops, I would say the ATR was definitely my favourite. It just looks so great and is a very comfortable aircraft to fly in. I love AirNZ's leather seats on ATR! The Beech 1900D was a nice aircraft too, but the ATR is definitely my favourite.

The best prop I'we flown is without any doubt Saab 2000 By swissair. I get it many times becouse Swissair used it o three daily flight from GOA to ZUR. Sometimes They uses ARJ 100, but Iwas happier to take the "concordino, as they call it.

It's the only regional I've flown with a windows also in the WC.!!!!!

I flight it also from ZUR to LCY : one of my best flight.

Unfortunately LX suspended the GOA route, even if the flight were always full.

I have flown in Horizon Air Metro 3, Dash 8-100, United Express 1900D Airliner, Cascade Airways Beechcraft 99 and HS748. I love prop-jets more than fan-jets. My favorite has to be Metro 3 all the way. I would like to fly on Horizon Airs new Dash 8-400 some day. Robert nwdc10

Large Turbo Prop would have to be the Convair 580 I just love the Whistle sound those Allisons make, its a robust aatractive plane.

Small-Midsize is the Twin Otter -200/300, man this thing performs. I have seen that thing takeoff in a few hundred feet and climb and climb, and I love its weird slow speed approach. I also love the way it sounds when it passes over on appraoch.

I love the Cessna Caravan and the Twin Otter. They're like flying SUVs, with a nice sturdy feel. Not sure if I'd like to spend many hours in one, but for short flights they're a lot of fun.

The Saab 2000 and ATR72-500 (but only the -500!) are real beauties. So smooth and quiet, it's hard to tell you're not flying on a jet. Haven't tried the Q series yet, but I'm sure they're similarly comfortable.

My least favorite planes to fly on are the Jetstream and the Metro. Claustrophobic, loud, and generally unpleasant--in short, they're what give turboprops a bad name among the flying public!

I have flown the ATR42, ATR72, Fokker 50 and the scarily small LET410EPV.

My vote for this thread goes to the cute and sturdy ATR42. I think the Fokker is an ancient design and noisy with it.

The ultimate turboprop for me. I grew up watching these beauties in the late 60's. Before the age of metal detectors, where you could walk right out on the walkway in ELM and watch them close up. The unmistakable sound of those Rolls Royce Darts, and the fire in the exhaust as they started up........nothing else like it, and there never will be again.

I'm going back a long way, but I'll never forget my first flight in a turboprop. It was in 1955 and I'd gone to CLE from YYZ for the National Air Races. I had a TCA DC-3 for the trip to Cleveland, but came back in a Viscount. Wow, what a difference!

For the most part, yes. There are Mods going on to progressively fix the little snags. Good aircraft, we curse it much much less than a couple years ago. Qucik, quiet, fuel efficient and very very comfortable to fly one.

I still love the Q200's though...
