Plane and Glider Collide, Killing Four

PEORIA, Ariz. (Dec. 28) - A small plane and a glider collided in mid-air Sunday above the desert in suburban Phoenix, killing four men aboard, authorities said.

Both aircraft took off from the Turf Soaring School in Peoria, west of Phoenix, and were destroyed in the afternoon crash, said Jerry Johnston, the Federal Aviation Administration regional operator.

Two people were aboard a Piper J-3 Cub airplane; the other two victims were occupants of a 1983 Schleicher model glider, Johnston said.

The aircraft crashed away from any buildings, said Sgt. Michael Ashley, a Peoria police spokesman.

Investigators from the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to arrive Monday to investigate.

Authorities didn't identify the victims. The collision occurred just west of the school near Paradise Valley, authorities told KFYI radio.

A man who answered the telephone at the Turf Soaring School said he didn't have information about the collision and didn't want to comment.

Police say the school runs a small airport for single-engine planes, ultralights and other recreational aircraft. <<<<<<<<

God bless peace in rest for 4 people.

First off I must give my condolences to the people involved and their families. On a serious note, I must say I am not surprised this happened. The area north of Phoenix is known as the "Northwest Practice Area" for the flight schools based at Deer Valley Airport. At any given time there are anywhere from 5-15 aircraft operating in that area, from the flight schools alone. The airspace is not controlled, however there is a CTAF(122.75) in use for the area. Many times people forget to switch to the frequency or just do not know that there is a frequency out there to use. I personally have almost had 3 midairs in that area involving people who were not on the CTAF. Anyhow, that is enough of my ranting for now.
