Avianca Colombia Pilots Question:

Tue Dec 30, 2003 5:09 am

I was doing some of my famous "backyard spotting" this afternoon and just heard an Avianca Colombia plane come by, The pilot did his "Avianca 38 visual 9L" thing, but I noticed something odd. What I noticed is that the pilot sounded like he had a southern accent (a USA SOUTHERN accent). This has led me to a few theories:
1) they hire translators
2) They hire American pilots
3) I was just hearing things

anyone know if one of those theories are right?

Could be 2) and 3)
The fact is that Avianca hired some 757's with North American crew for a few days during this "high season".
Also, about a month ago, most of Av pilot were on "turtle operation" (operacion tortuga), a kind of strike, so the hired North American pilots to fly their own fleet.
So, on what date did you noticed that? on which city?

Well, Avianca leased some Boeing 757s for the high season, I also heard these pilots in my scanner weeks ago here in Panama.

Did you got any pic of this plane?

Felipe

Hey Flairport,

It was a Boeing 757? which color scheme?

There are good spots in FLL to watch planes?

It was a 757... the plane at first looked to me like a transmeridian. It had a blue tail with what looked like a globe and then words on the front. I found out the airline from my scanner and the pilot who started this whole thing.

I spot from my backyard.... thr view is not spectacular, but you can see the planes and the airline clearly.

So if the 757 looked like if it was from TransMeridian, it's definitely one of the leased planes Copa737 was talking about...

Strange thing though the accent you might have noticed...  Confused

I just returned to Miami from Bogota tonight, there was an Avianca B757 that called for push and start minutes after us (destination Cartagena, I believe) and he definately had a North American accent. My f/o and I were both surprised to hear this.... by the way, the paint scheme appeared to be TransMeridien, though it was dark and hard to tell.
