United Flight Crew Bases

Tue Dec 30, 2003 11:37 am

I was on a United flight over the past few days and had a New York based flight crew. It was a domestic flight.

Where are their "crew bases" located? I would presume Chicago, Denver, Washington DC, LA, San Francisco and Tokyo. Are there others??

Does anything special exist at a crew base?

I look forward to reading everyones replies.

I once flew on a UA flight from CMH to DEN (summer 2002), and the crew announced they were LAS-based.

ORD747CLE:

The last time I checked United also has bases at Seattle, Honolulu, and London, U.K.

Crew bases are decided on the flying needs of the airline.

My last UA flight from LAS-ORD ORD-LAS...both legs were LAS-based crews.

Flight Attendant Bases and approximate populations:

Europe:
CDG 300
FRA 250
LHR 700

Asia:
HKG 425
NRT 700
Recently closed in the past two years: SIN and TPE

US:
BOS 700
DCA 1900 (flight attendants cover DCA, IAD and BWI)
DEN 1400
EWR 600
HNL 250
JFK 1200 (flight attendants cover JFK and LGA)
LAS 250
LAX 2500
MIA 500
ORD 4700
PHL 250
SEA 500
SFO 3500 (flight attendants cover SFO and OAK)
once upon a time there were also bases in PIT, DTW and I think CMH.

well for being based in NY...they cover LGA, JFK, and EWR.

i remember i flew from BWI-ORD July of '02 on an A319 and i had IAD, ORD, and LAX based FA's on the flight. thought that was kinda odd since it was an A319 plane.

You're right, Santiago was a flight attendant base until about two years ago.

JFK based flight attendants only serve out of LGA and JFK. EWR has their own staffing. In my opinion, this won't last too much longer, it's not effecient at all for two seperate bases for such a close geographic area and three airports. Only time, technology and a better transportation system in between the airports will tell the future for the EWR based FA's!

thanx for the correction FA4UA. I guess i mistook it for how AA does it. i had a crashpad room mate who is NY based and he says AA covers the 3 ny airports.

FA4UA - That's some great info about the numbers of crew at each base. Does that mean that's where the crew lives or are there United crew offices and such at the location as well?

FA4UA.... are PHL and LAS still considered domiciles? I thought they closed but the FAs were still commuting from there. Hey, you have all of the other UAL employees in your respected user list...what happened to me????  Big grin

ORD747CLE.....the crews can live anywhere. We have some DEN based crews (pilots and FAs) that live as close as Aspen, Denver, and Colorado Springs, but as far away as the east coast and seattle. I used to know a 747-400 captain that had a house in Santa Barbara and Hong Kong. Sometimes he had a tougher time commuting from SBA than HKG!

would pilots base at the same places, or are some of those flight attendants only? If they can differ, anyone know about those?

FA4UA:
You mentioned something about transportation between airports, so does that mean that in some cases you have to hop from one airport to another within the same day, like, say, ORD-LGA, then switch to JFK, and fly JFK to wherever? How would transportation between the two be arranged, in a crew bus?

Thanks
