Flown On Plane You Later Found Had Been In Crash?

Tue Dec 30, 2003 10:10 pm

Ever flown on a plane which you later discovered had been in a crash (of some description) or in any other unusual incident? I ask for a good reason: yesterday I flew from GLA-MAN aboard G-RJXG, as below (read the caption):

Kinda chilling, even though I wasn't on the plane! lol.

Yes, back in the 80s I flew on Aloha's 737 "Queen Liliuokalani," which is the one that later tragically ripped open inflight.

More recently, I flew from PEK to SHA on the Air China 767 that later crashed in Korea.

Not the same aircraft, but still somewhat creepy: I traveled to Paris on TWA flight 800 on July 17, 1994, exactly two years to the day before it blew up, and in 1995 I flew to Geneva on Swissair flight 111!

Of course, this stuff probably happens to people all the time--it's just that the non-airplane-geeks don't bother to note flight numbers and registrations.  Smile

I have been on two airplanes that subsequently crashed.

The first was the TACA B-767 that overshot the runway and crashed on landing at Guatemala City in the early 90's (?). No passengers were lost (TACA has not lost a single passenger to an airline accident in modern times).

The second was the TAN-Sahsa B-727 that crashed on a flight between Managua and Tegucigalpa in the late 1980's. There were many fatalities in this accident.

On the morning of May 7 1990, I flew AI 129 BOM-LHR on B747-237B VT-EBO (msn 20558). The aircraft returned to DEL later that day, but was involved in an accident on landing there and was written off.

On December 17 1995, I flew on Tower Air's B747-136 N605FF (msn 20271) from JFK to BOM via AMS. The aircraft returned to JFK and was written off there during a take-off attempt on December 20 1995.

And of course, on September 11 2001, I turned down a seat on UA flight 93 from EWR to SFO after my Delta flight connection was cancelled, mainly because I needed Delta Skymiles to requalify for Medallion status. I watched the aircraft taxi out and takeoff as I boarded my Delta Express flight to Orlando. N591UA passed into legend a few hours later.

I've been on other aircraft that were subsequently lost in crashes, but these three were extremely close calls IMHO.

Crossair
I flew on the Jumbolino which crashed near Zurich. It was from Basel to Zurich, something like 2-3 years before the crash.

China Airlines
I flew on the Boeing 747-200 from Hong Kong to Taipei, around 5-6 month before it crashed on a flight from Taipei to Hong Kong and killed all people on board.

Like all other crashed, very sad ...

I fly a Cessna 310 that has been in a gear up landing.
I checked the records and it was in the late 70s.

When I was a freightdog ,I flew N19454,A DC-3C,ex ,C47, ex,United Mainliner, out of PTK,DAY,MDT,and EWR. She was a good ship, a lovely, reliable old ship, who found her way to Alaska , and eventually found her fate against a ridgeline in the arctic dark. God rest her crew.

I flew BD MAN-LHR onboard G-MIDJ last January 2003. Later on in May the aircraft was involved in a freak hail storm incident over Germany puncturing the nose cone and cracking the cockpit glass.
I took a photo of the cabin and went into the cockpit, weird to think about what drama went on aboard that plane.

Story was reported here
http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_785167.html

"It was like a hail of bullets and then a huge thump. Everyone was screaming and we are lucky to be alive. Everyone clapped and cheered when we landed."

In July of 1987, I flew on an Avianca 727-21 registered as HK-1716 "Antonio Villavicencio" (MSN 18999) from Cartagena (CGA) to Bogota (BOG). Less than a year later, in March, 1988, she crashed into a mountain shortly after takeoff from Cucuta (CUC) en route to Cartagena. All 143 souls on board were killed.

Investigators say poor visibility and an overly talkative deadheading pilot in the jump seat contributed to the crash.

Not me, but the mother of a dear friend of mine was a Pan Am Flight Attendant!
In the early morning hours of december 21st, 1988 she worked and flew "Clipper Maid of the Seas" from SFO into LHR!
The rest is sad history!

I have flown by VT-EFO of Air-India, This was the aircraft which was blown up over the Atlantic ocean in 1985. This was also the only aircraft in which I have had the pleasure of sitting on the F/O seat on sector BOM-FCO in 1983.

Yes. Piedmont bought a 727 from Delta. The airplane had belong to Northeast and had been crashed into the seawall at BOS. The A/C had been repaired and returned to service. Don't remember the tail number.

As a small point of interest, Piedmont also owned the 727 out of which D.B. Cooper jumped with his bag of money. It was registered as N838N. I worked on that more times than I can count.

I flew on an airplane that had an interesting history. The aircraft was a DC-10-30 of British Airways. In October of 1998, I flew on this aircraft twice (LGW-ABJ). It was registered G-MULL. I later found out that this DC-10 was originally flown by Ariana Afghan Airlines. In the late 1970s, it was struck by a surface to air missile. Although, the aircraft received substantial damage (the account I read said one of the engines was actually blown off), it landed safely. After it was repaired, it was bought by British Caledonian and received the registration identification G-MULL. It spent many years in service and passed on to BA. When I flew it, it was a marvelous plane.

I was in the Boy Scouts in 1961 and went on a DC6B charter flight on President Airlines to Israel via Gander -Shannon and Athens. We took commercial but took the same Plane the "Woodrow Wilson" from London via Shannon and Gander back to JFK. There was a problem with an engine and we were delayed 7 hours in Shannon. The plane then crash just after taking off from Shannon with a full loan a month later-a tired crew was somehow blamed.

Only one springs to mind (i'm sure there are many more if I start counting 707's): UTA DC10 NOU-SYD N54629 (all economy Pacific configuration then).
Blown up 2 years later.

and a whole lot of planes that have been in "accidents" (reported to FAA as accidents) but usually just for serious injuries incurred in turbulence.

in 1994 my wife and I took a Turkish Birgen Air 757 from HAM to Barbados (with refueling stop in Gander, Newfoundland). Later one of them (TC-GEN) crashed into the Atlantic after departure from the Dominican Republic killing 189 people. As Birgen air only had two 757´s there´s a 50% chance I was on the one that crashed... definately not a good feeling...

They had 2? I always thought Birgenair only had 1 757-200, 1 767-200, 1 737-300 and 1 DC-8-72!
So if my information is correct, there is a 100% chance you where on that 757!

In 1987 I flew from Alicante - Spain to Newcastle - UK on B737-204 G-BGYL. The aircraft then belonged to Britannia Airways and was named Jean Batten. I remember this flight well, even though I was a child at the time. We were sat in the second last row on the starboard side. The stewardess at the back was on her last flight before being married and they threw confetti out of the galley at her.

In 1992 this aircraft was destroyed while flying for Copa Panama, killing all on board. I believe at the time of the crash it was still partially in the Britannia livery.

In 1995 I flew to Tenerife South and back on the same Tristar of Caledonian Airways, G-BBAI. This aircraft had overrun the runway at Leeds/Bradford years before and broke its nosewheel.

The very first plane I ever flew as a pilot was a Cessna 152 (N24961) based out of MYF, and it crashed when an instructor and his student were practicing spins and failed to recover. (RIP to them both)

I loved that lil' 152!

Yes, the HP-1205CMP was in Britannia livery with Copa titles. Also this was the first Copa flight between Panama-Barranquilla with 48 passengers on board.

I also flew on the Crossair RJ-100 that crashed, (@ZRH, 24/11/01.)
It was HB-IXM. My flight was Geneve-Athens on 15/06/99, LX3314.

The next tuesday this aircraft crashed in Penn. All I could think about was where I was sitting and where I saw the flight crew chatting. It was very strange. Then on September 20, 2001 I flew to IAD-ORD and when I was in ORD i was coming out of the tunnel between concourse B and C and as the escalator rose I saw N592UA parked. It was very strange. I refused to fly a 757 for almost a year.

In 1988 I flew aboard United DC-10 N1819U. This was the plane that crashed less than a year later in Iowa. The flight I was on was UA 106, LAX-ORD. The problem that caused the crash was a chronic one, meaning the crack in the #2 engine disc was there when I was aboard her.

Jeez - just read about the BA DC-10 above, i worked on that for 2 years!!!
Always new there was something funny about it - bit of a rogue!  Smile

Also worked on a Air Europe 757 for 3 years that had crash landed in Funchal in the mid-80's! poss VH/RM/GW can't remember.
Forward Undercarriage crashed up threw the galley on a heavy landing.
Fuselage bad;y damaged too.
That was a little devil too - the Alert call always used to go on take-off, never could trace the fault!

We also had a F100 there that had suffered a major cockpit fire on landing once. The hostie at the back was so adrenalin pumped on evacuating she threw the O/W hatch clear of the wingtip!!!!!
All safe, thank God.

Dan-Air used to have a 727 that had a clear 'hump' in the fuselage after a wheels up crash in Africa with a previous operator , may have been NL ?...

Two Actually One I had flown on and the other I was a "Guest." While it was on the ground while I was waiting for another flight.

the one I was a "guest." on I was a really little kid and I had my picture taken in front of a national Airlines Boeing 727 N4744 A few months prior when it was "inadvertantly." landed in Pensacola (Escambia) bay. In May 1978 I don't know the fate of this aircraft after she was pulled out of the bay I know she was shipped to Van Nuys Calf but there is no further information

The Other was an Eastern Airlines Airbus N222EA How ever I flew on it when it belonged to Continental. I heard somewhere that she had been destroyed however I know not the circumstances.

Back in July 1999, I caught a media flight on Blue Angels' No. 7 aircraft while they were in MKE for a 4th of July show on the lakefront. The No. 7 aircraft is the fleet's only two seater, and is used for media flights and as a spare incase one of the other six goes down for maintenance. Three months later it crashed in Georgia on a training flight - I believe the flight was training a new pilot for next year's tour.

I resisted answering this one because I knew the answer would be chilling. It is. I have flown eleven airplanes and one helicopter that later crashed. Nine of them were military, of those, three were midairs with loss of all aboard both aircraft. Only two were airliners but that is far too many.

I can't begin to tell you how eerie that would make me feel. It'd be just a routing takeoff at the time, but after 9/11 I'd look back and think about how as I watched that plane take off there were 5 or 6 terrorists aboard, and that the people who boarded, who almost included myself, lost their lives. You're very lucky, Sean, very lucky.

It'd be just a routing takeoff at the time, but after 9/11 I'd look back and think about how as I watched that plane take off there were 5 or 6 terrorists aboard, and that the people who boarded, who almost included myself, lost their lives. You're very lucky, Sean, very lucky

I second that, Sean, you are a very lucky person, could you come with me to Vegas, LOL!
