FA's New Speech To Cabin Pax

Wed Dec 31, 2003 10:29 am

I flew UA this last aug. to LHR from ORD. Return was from LHR-IAD-ORD.
On all of the legs the FA's seemed to have added a new item in the pre-T/O speech that they give. For our customers in FC you may use the lavs in the front, Economy class your lavs are in the back you may not use the ones in front."( in this case middle on the widebodies)
Now on a 777 and 767 there are lavs at the head and behind of cattle class. So would this be a security type issue or a UA policy thing? Also are any other airlines doing this?

I have not heard of anyone else doing this. However, I am thinking it is a security type thing: to discourage passengers from congregating in the front of the aircraft.

There are other F/As who post here, so I am fairly sure they will be along shortly to weigh in on this question.

Both. The security issue is having too many pax hanging around the cockpit door. So they have only F class pax use it. The normal annc should ask pax to use the lav in their ticketed cabin (which bugs me, b/c what if you were ticketed for coach, but upgraded?). Business has some right in the middle on the 777 and econ has them way in the back and in the middle.

Alaska Airlines flight attendants advise customers in the main cabin that they're welcome to use the First Class lav, but that they cannot stand or start a line forward of row six (the first coach cabin row) to avoid having people congregating in First or near the cockpit door.

The new annoucements have to do with security. Came from TSA last week when the threat level went up.

Yes, it is new and across the board for all US carriers. FC for FC and YC for YC. No more mix and match. And no congregating in the cabin areas at all.

Cool!! That seems to make more sense. Appreciate it!

Was this just within this year or couple weeks after 9/11?

Happy New Year

It's not "new" because I heard the same announcement back in September, on a UAL 772 SFO-ORD and 744 ORD-SFO. UA has been doing it for a while now, at the very least.

I was referring to what I had said. About No FC to YC and No YC to FC and no congregating in the cabin. The FC announcement has been in effect for awhile.

I thought lavs in first class were always reserved for first class passengers. Also heard American makes an announcement stating that 'crossing of cabins is not permitted' - meaning, Y class is restricted to Y class, J to J, F to F, etc... no congregating of pax onboard the a/c period...
