Airport Improvement Fee Query - YVR Vs. YYZ

Fri Jan 02, 2004 8:19 am

I came back from Toronto on the 21st of December to Vancouver and I noticed the new Terminal 1 (how could you miss it?)

My point is that I keep hearing about how much money its costing. Don't know the exact figures but I know its a lot.

What I would like to know is why does YYZ not have an Airport Improvement Fee for all the work that they are doing and YVR has one for all the work that they are not doing ? I know they are going to build a new wing in YVR before the olympics come around in 2010 but it is still far from being complete.

Maybe I am missing something. Anyone care to shed some light on this ?

YVR just finished renovating a couple years back. They built a new International terminal which is quite well known for its design.
I think YVR has the 'improvement' fee to help pay off and regain from the losses during the reno.

Common misconception. YYZ does have an Airport Improvement Fee that is already inlcuded in the price of the ticket. Off hand I believe it is roughly 10 dollars per person per flight. In fact most airports in Canada have airport improvement fees but Vancouver is the only one recognized since it is paid at a later date. YVR actually receives less money through AIF's since its sort of a make-work project for the employees the collect and issue the AIF's. Ideally all improvement fees should be included in the price of the ticket. Finally, YVR is undergoing construction, while not considerable like YYZ, such as the renovation of domestic A-pier for Westjet, possible expansion of the international terminal, possible rapid transit line if that is still on the books, and completion of cargo facilities north of the north runway where the new UPS facility is.

Like Spiderz said, YYZ includes the AIF in the price of your ticket, while YVR does not.

YVR's is $10 and YYZ's is $25 and rising.

Doesn't YUL also have an AIF that is payed by the passenger at the airport, rather than incorporating it in the price of the ticket?

YYZ's is $25 and rising.

Holy crap!!!

That's $50 per RT.... I'm going to be sick..... If it was $0 then I could get an AA RT ticket to LGA for $120 not $170...... Boohoo

Is there any other way?!?!? YYZ Is like Asia during SARS...... Everyone was avoiding.. Or at least trying to avoid any contact with Asia..... We have few A/L's as it is with AC around. Grrrrr.......

The AIF is not $25...

It was just increased on Sept 1st, 2003 to:

$12.00 for all departing passengers
$8.00 for passengers connecting through YYZ

All fees are collected by the airline and included in your final ticket price.

This is a bit off topic.

The next time you rent a car at YVR, check your bill carefully. The add-ons, taxes, and fees actually exceed the daily rental price of many on-airport cars. In other words, you're actually paying more in fees than you are for your car.  Sad
