I chose to fly VS over BA to SFO because
A. They were slightly cheaper
B. I had a chance of getting the V:Port IFE (Which I got, thank you Tinkerbelle)
C. They have a better image for younger passengers like me, they have the cool factor were as BA to me, seem to attract the older English, although i'm sure young people do travel them.
D. I like the livery
E. People had recommended them to me, friendly crew etc, which I found to be true. On our climb the head F/A said that drinks are free and we would love to invite you all upto the bar at the front of the aircraft but we would end up flying at a funny angle, which most of the pax in econ found funny!

The seat pitch was the same as BA's and the food was nothing to sing about but overall i still prefer VS to BA and thus im flying with them again this year to IAD. Why would I travel BA to IAD, they keep getting stopped!!  Wink/being sarcastic

Its a shame that the BA flights keep getting stopped by the Americans, but lets not let that influence buying decisions - it could just as easily been VS the americans went for (in addition to Air France and AeroMexico). The liklihood is this scaremongering will last up to the election.

I agree that VS is the better of the two, esp when you get into upper class.

Flying with BA for the first time in February to CPT in World Traveller class. Anyone had any good experiences with British Airways long-haul in World Traveller class?

I think BA and VS are both very good airlines, for slightly different reasons and exceed their US equivalents at Heathrow, UA and AA.

British Airways has a vast network, dependable service, and even in its economy (World Traveller) section, it pays attention to some details that most airlines overlook. BA's planes are often always clean, and I have found the airline to be punctual and generally reliable. Cabin crew range from the professional and pleasant to the slightly surly but never outright rude.

Virgin Atlantic is the more fun airline to fly of the two. Food quality in my opinion tends to be slightly better, as is the entertainment, and the cabin crew are always pleasant and cheerful. The pitch in Economy is terrible though and the seats are hard. And VS is not always punctual but overall, they are very, VERY good.

I'd rate BA an 8.5 and VS a 9.0.

I've only flown on VS in their upper class and BA in steerage, so I can't compare them head to head, but VS did treat me right. Prior to VS introducing the new cabin in upperclass I thought I might like to try the f/c product at BA, now I think VS will keep me. Besides VS's uniforms aren't frumpy like the ones at BA, I know it's just a small thing, but I think BA dresses it's female f/a's to look like Mary Poppins.  Smile)

I think the BA Mary Poppins outfit is being phased out now, with a new one introduced.

I have yet to see it though (since I mainly travel VS) ...........

for me I like Virgin because of the bad deeds done by BA do Virgin in the past. Plus Virgin always tries new stuff and I have to give it to Richard Branson for selling his record company to save an airline. so go Virgin

Ryanair737:

Flew BA to CPT in World Traveller last year - full flight (around Cricket World Cup time) & it really was cattle class. Not a pleasant flight - but then BA aren't alone at cramming people in back in Economy. I don't think VS are any more spacious at the back.

World Traveller Plus on the flight home, though (777 from HRE) - much more pleasant. Do yourself a favour & pay for the upgrade...!  Smile

Gotta say BA all the way.  Innocent But I am biased My Grand Parents, Parents and auntie worked and are still working for BA. I am curious does the Virgin Upper class Flat bed go horizontal or does it still have the 10 degree pitch?

It is BA for me. I have flown both; VS was amusing, but the annoying rock music, overly hip attitude, etc., wore me out. BA just seems more polished, and BA has fantastic connections at LHR to other cities in Europe. I agree with the comment above that WT in BA is akin to cattle class. The 3-3-3 configuation on the 777s is bad news. Try and get upgraded to WT Plus.

10 years ago I would have said VS, but I haven't found them as good in the last few years and IMO BA have the upper hand again.

Well i'm flying BA for the first time in February to New York in World Traveller. It was either BA or VS and ended up with BA and looking forward to seeing what they're like. Can't wait, and i'm not just talking about the flight, always wanted to visit New York!

Both are very good airlines, but I generally try and fly Virgin Atlantic whenever possible. However like many people I always try and find the best deal and get the cheapest seat. I have no loyalties to any airline!!

Never have flown in VS.

In May, for the 1st time, I flew BA, from LIS-LHR-YYZ-LHR-LIS.

From LIS-LHR, flew on a A320 and LHR-LIS on B757. Except for punctuality I did not find anything special in terms of the service compared with other European companies. Both planes seemed to be very old and not very well treated inside.

Now, from LHR to YYZ and on the way back I traveled in the World Travel Class, on a B747, and it was much different. The plane inside had a different atmosphere (for better), the FA's were very polite and the food was very good (which was a good surprise for a portuguese like me that appreciates very good food).

Conclusion: European flights - they can do much better
Intercontinental flights: I found it excellent

Happy new year to all

BA all the way... If you're like most passengers and have to actually pay for your tickets, getting an upgrade may not be so easy to come by, so I base my opinion on Economy class travel.
Virgin's pitch in coach is horrendous for anyone over 5ft 9ins or so.
Coupled with the fact that VS has this "hipper" younger marketing strategy, you will be packed in like sardines back in coach.
Service wise there really isn't much difference.
it usually boils down to personal preference such as whether you prefer a red uniform over a blue one, or if you just go with the ever so slight price difference at time of booking.
Try em both if you can.

Both are good airlines and reliable for the most part, but I do prefer to fly VS...I think the BA World Travellers Class is a joke...not what you expect...
But I think the service and staff is much better on VS...I have flown both of them from LHR to Lagos (LOS).

British Airways

The classic and elegant British airline. Service is hallmark!

Virgin Atlantic

The un-classic and un-elegant stepchild in British aviation!

I have flown SFO-LHR-SFO on both VS (4 times) and BA (6 times). On 3 out of 4 of theses times on VS it left late, and once at Heathrow we had to park at a remote stand. But the in-flight service is very good.

On all the BA flights I have been on, the plane left on time and once at Heathrow we parked at a gate, not a remote stand. As for in-flight service it is also very good and similar to VS.

Both airlines are good but I would have to say that I would fly BA over VS.

VS ALL the way- ive been silver in their FF program for almost 7 years now and for 18/19 flights from LAX-LHR Ive chosen them (UAL was the one singled out- NEVER EVER again!). I like their color scheme, their image, and their F/As have GOT to be the most patient, nicest, not to mention good looking ( the men for sure!) flying these days. I can understand that their image may not be what some older people may prefer (im 26), but its good enough for me for the time being. The Economy service is about as tight as can normally be expected on any airline, but if you know the right seats and the right times of the year to fly then its generally not that bad (hell im asleep for most of the flight anyway). I like the full little packets they hand out for both ways, the food is better than most airlines that ive experienced, and even their charity change appeal is welcome ( not sure if others do this?). Im not bothered by their connections- they have enough partners in both the US and throughout Europe that I can usually get to where Im needing to go quickly and easily enough (last Feb i did RNO-PHX-LAX-LHR-AMS in one day and I had a very easy 3 hour connection through LHR to the BD desk to catch that flight to AMS- though honestly the LAX ground staff could have been a bit better as they almost checked my bags through to MAN instead of AMS- had to go back and sort that out)

Now ive yet to fly BA anywhere in the world- I normally take VS partners- but in some ways im rather loathe to do so.

Actually though, the VS Economy product has diminished in recent years, because of cutbacks i imagine, and I really hate getting some of the older aircraft into LAX (like Maiden Toulouse) but im hoping to try the service out of NYC here in March and maybe catch a newer craft! I think maybe putting a bit more money into Economy would be good- even removing a few seats and trying a MRTC approach a la AA. And bring back the ducky!
Hang on tightly, Let go lightly

Care to explain??? But you're notorious for baseless statements anyway.

IMO, Both are great airlines, it really depends what appeals to you. Both airlines provide high quality of service consistently. BA has a more traditional approach, while VS thrives on its hip image. Crowds like me are attracted to VS because of its vibrant, fun loving, enjoyable experience.

Virgin all the way!

cheers

Window Seat,

British Airways for years has set the standard for service an quality within the industry!

Once on a British Airways flight ex Sao Paulo to London the Purser came by my seat and informed me that British Airways was unable to connect me to my onward flight to Seychelles due to the Rio de Janeiro and then Sao Paulo delay. He offered me several options including transfer to another airline, or overnight at British Airways expense and a one day delayed arrival in Dubai. Upon arrival at London Heathrow I was given a rather nice room at the Le Meridien Hotel and allowed to stopover for some 26 hours in London. It was a very nice gesture on behalf of British Airways. It is always nice to stop in London for a bit of shopping or to do the ever standard morning walk in Hyde Park....Of course Virgin Atlantic doesn’t even fly to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or Seychelles... now do they?

Another splendid flight aboard British Airways was ex Verona to London continuing to Melbourne. Upon arrival at London Gatwick myself and three other travelers were needing a rather rapid transfer to Melbourne from London Heathrow, the British Airways representative was aware of the issue and a private sedan transfer was offered at no additional cost due to the delay!.The sedan seemed to fly to Heathrow in time for our Qantas flight to Singapore and Melbourne.

British Airways.....

The World’s Favourite Airline

I'll begin with this: You will have to pay me to fly BA.

VS, simply put, is an airline where the service is of higher quality (and quite freqeuntly, much cheaper than BA).
Having 15+ economy meals on VS, I have yet to have anything near a bad meal. Recently on BA Club World, half of the food was over cooked, the other half under cooked - and, I got food posioning.

I find the flight crews on BA to be really good, or really bad. VS: always excellent.

There is just too much to say...but VS over BA.

 Smile

Lhr001,

Everyone is entitled a personal opinion and I respect that. There is a difference between personal opinions and proclamations (if they are based on hard facts, that is). While you have described the superb service you have received on BA, and it does conform to what you've described about BA there is no mention, however, of any hard facts that would make VS a "step-child of the British aviation industry."

cheers

if flying coach, virgin is usually slightly cheaper and their coach service is above average. if flying upper class(first class), both offer exception service. if flying business class, take british airways. they offer a true business class, where as virgin only offers premium economy. this is wider coach seats with better legroom, but coach food and service. my premium economy fare was the same as british airways' true business class, and i mistakenly chose virgin.

Why should I fly Virgin Atlantic?

I am fond of civilized air travel... and civilized airlines!

An airline with a half naked women on the side is not civilized!

Also British Airways network is much more vast than that of the hip-modern VS!
