Sport Teams Planes

Sat Jan 03, 2004 2:37 am

Mark Cuban bought a 757 for the Mavericks about 2 years ago
I've seen an Atlanta Thrasher's 737 at LGA
I know that when the hornets were in Charlotte they charters a 737-200 from Pace airlines
I saw Oklahoma University's team getting off a CO 767 on TV last week

As for owners:
Tom Hicks (owners of texas rangers and the dallas stars) has a GV
Wayne Hyzinga (owner of the Dolphins) has a BBJ
The owner of the Indianapolis Colts has a Dassault
Mark Cuban has a GV

Does anybody know what became of the st. louis rams b727? In 1999 it was a regular last run to PIT from STL flight when I worked as a ramp rat.

When the service academies (ie West Point or the Naval Academy) athletic teams travel, do they use military aircraft or charter civilian planes?

Actually Mark Cuban never bought a 757. It's leased from Pace Airlines. Last week the TrailBlazers were in Cleveland and they flew in on N801DM.
The Cleveland Browns always charter a Delta 767, and the Indians usually take a Continental 737-800. And for the Cavs, they have their own 737-200 they use registered as N583CC. There are some photos in the gallery. Ohh and the Pittsburgh Penguins have a 737-200 also. Not sure what the Reg is though.

Prior to the penguins 732, didn't they charter a caravelle? This would be the last part of 98 all of 99.

See the MSP Update page for the list of Minnesota-sports-teams-based planes and any of those who come up here to play. Tim, the webmaster, keeps it incredibly current!

The Tennessee Titans always charter a Delta 757-200 whenever they travel anywhere. It is usually DAL flight number 9885.

I have seen the Oakland Raiders come in this year on an Hawaiian 767-300, the Buffalo Bills came in on a World Airways MD-11, the Miami Dolphins came in on an America Airlines 757-200, The Pittsburgh Steelers always come in on a US Airways 757-200, The Tampa Bay Buccaneers left here last Sunday afternoon on a Continental 757-200, and the Indianapolis Colts came in on a Northwest 757-200.

About two weeks ago when the Green Bay Packers were in Oakland for Monday Night Football... They returned to Green Bay on a Northwest 747-200.
Mighty big plane for a football team!

There have been a few other teams that have come into Nashville this year but I forgot to look and see what they flew on.

Aren't the Avs sponsored by Frontier, and then if they were why would they charter a plane that is owned by one of Frontier's rivals?

The New England Patriots have switched to a Delta 767-300.

Other teams:
New York Yankees: CO 757
Boston Red Sox: DL 738
Kansas City Chiefs: DL 763
Jacksonville Jaguars: DL 757
St. Louis Rams: AA 757
Buffalo Bills: World MD-11
New York Giants: UA 757/767 (I don't know which, but it is a UA Boeing, or has been in the past)
New Orleans Hornets: have their own private B727 (I have spotted it at MSY...it was parked on the other side of 10/28, across from the terminal area)

I once had the opportunity to fly with the Boston Celtics in 1990 from EWR to BOS on a Continental 737. They were on the D/E/F side in coach. Pretty interesting (in hind-sight) being on a flight with a good number of Hall of Famers.

The St. Louis Blues use a charter service (737s) out of SUS (Sprit of St. Louis Airport). Up until this year they had a deal with AA but with the pull out, decrease of advertising with the team and ridiculous costs...they decided to go elsewhere.

I remember a very clever ad by Alaska Airlines a few years ago. It showed an AS 727 tail with a Seattle Seahawks helmet on it. The caption said: (numbers are approximate here)

"Last year we carried 14 times for 25,000,000 yards."

BA has a 777 with markings for the UK soccer teams. Simple text, not much. I tried to get a photo at LHR recently, but immigration stopped me (and I was not even in the immigration area!).

The Mavericks' plane is owned by MLW Aviation LLC of Dallas, TX, not by Pace Airlines. Pace may operate the a/c much like Frontier operates Blue Moon Aviation's ACJ.

Flairport,

Columbus Blue Jackets DC9 is painted in basic Legend Airlines colors with Blue Jackets in white script going up the tail.

Oklahoma chartered a CO 777 for the OKC-MSY flight the other day.

Frontier definetely sponsers the avs, they had ads on the boards and on the hanging scoreboard last game I went to. They also had their commercials and video clips running on the jumbotron between periods. Pretty much all of Pepsi Center is sponsored by Frontier (Nuggets, Avs, Crush, Mammoth). Also, I believe United was a sponsor up until last year. I think however, that they do not use a set company, because I have seen them flying NW and another airline called Sky King, as you can see here in the remarks:

If you look up that reg though, it appears after reading remarks that Sky King also has chartered the Blackhawks, Wild, Stars, Flames, and Capitals just on that plane, so who knows. Go Avs!

TWA painted one of their 727-231/Adv. aircraft in the St. Louis Rams livery, ship #N64347, delivered 4/11/1979, now in service with Allegro Airlines. If you search via the registration#, you'll find some good pictures of it.

Nycfuturepilot:

When we travel (Air Force Academy) we fly MilAir. The only real exceptions to this are the bigger Varisty teams. For example, I think we have a contract with Frontier which will Charter the planes for our football team. Most Varsity teams will fly on commercial jets, as MilAir a lot of times is unreliable and uncomfortable. When the JV teams play, they usually go MilAir, and usually use C-130's, although sometimes we'll go on KC-130's... The wrestling team actually got a MilAir on a C-21 (the AF's equivalent of an executive jet)... It usually all depends on what's available.

SkyKing Airlines operates charter flights for many NHL teams. To my knowledge, they fly St. Louis, San Jose, LA, Colorado, and Vancouver as well as others. Air Canada usually handles the other Canadian teams but I've only seen them on an A320 once in two years. They usually come to STL on a 737-200 that has an extra fuel tank in the fueslage. The Stars use a 727-200 plane recently purchased from AA. It's owned by the owners of the team. I had the chance to check out the cabin, nicest I've ever seen.

We used to handle any SkyKing flight into and out of STL. Most now go to SUS to avoid the security here. The only time we see their aircraft now is if they are flying heavy and need a longer runway. That is the reason San Jose is being handled by us this weekend.

Green Bay Packers: Northwest Airlines
Chicago Cubs: Midwest Airlines

P.S.

I know the Colorado Av's and the Detroit Redwings used Northwest 727's back in 1999, when i was a ramp rat in YVR. Also the Toronto Blue Jays used to use a 727-200 operated by Sporthawk/Skyservice, that a/c is now owned by Kelowna Flightcraft and is still configured for sports teams, but the a/c has been sitting on the YLW ramp for a couple months now.

Having grown up an L.A. Dodgers fan, I fondly remember their colorful airplanes. The Dodgers' canny and innovative owner, Walter O'Malley, bought his team a DC-6B in 1961, and two years later upgraded to a Lockheed Electra. The Electra was traded in for a Boeing 720-023B in 1971.

Now the O'Malleys are gone, the outfield fence is plastered with tacky ads, and the Dodgers travel on nondescript charters, like just about everybody else. (sigh)

What happened to the 727 used by the Canucks? I believe it was owned by Orca Bay group and was also used by the Grizzlies when they were still in Vancouver. I saw it once at BFI being serviced about 3 years ago.
