ORD/ATL "neck And Neck"

Sat Jan 03, 2004 7:56 am

Well, welcome to aviation's yearly useless contest to see who is the "busiest airport".

I do like the line at the end of the article, though...

While airports love the title for marketing and prestige, there also could be a downside to being the busiest airport, Shumann said.

"As a passenger you might get through the airport with no trouble because there aren't a lot of people and the plane pushes back on time, but unfortunately there are 10 planes waiting to take off in front of you," he said.

Aint that the truth?

"Who cares!"

My point exactly. It's not like I'm going to choose UA/AA over ATL because I want to brag to my friends that I connected through the alleged busiest airport.

Well here in Atlanta, being the World's Busiest Airport is a matter of pride. That was a proud achievement for our City back in the days when the Braves were sorry (they did not wait for the playoffs to implode like they do now), and before we hosted (or shall I say ruined) the Olympics. And keeping the title is of importance for Atlanta, as it is something we can claim that not other city can claim at the same time.

Srbmod, you beat me to it. I can see why you wouldn't care being from Omaha or Cleveland. But for me, and many of us, working at the world's busiest airport is a great matter of pride. It's no picnic.

OK... but that is only a shade different from "working at almost the world's busiest airport". It's still hard whether you are #1 or #4.

If an old lady goes to a travel agent wanting to book the lowest fare from PBI to SYR, and the agent finds a DL flight that connect sin ATL, is that old lady COUNTED in ATL's numbers?????. Is ATL the biggest O & D airport?

Passengers counts are passengers that use the airport, not O&D traffic. O&D numbers are completely different.

The other side of O&D is "enplanements". A hub naturally has more of those.

that's what happens when you have hourly widebodies to every destination in Florida (not literally but just about) verses narrowbodies and RJs to several destinations.....its just a matter of how Delta vs. aa/ua chooses a/c. Of course, how much of a factor will Airtran become in the future as they expand?
