United Vs Delta - Who's Bigger?

Sat Jan 03, 2004 9:21 am

The ORD vs ATL article got me thinking about who truly was bigger, United or Delta.

I have analyzed a few passenger numbers and it appears that Delta is just slightly behind United.

...BUT, with United still cutting capacity, is it possible Delta could become the world's second largest airline? ...or can United only get bigger?

I can't find any numbers, but the last statistics I saw (for year 2002 I believe) showed DL carried more passengers than UA, but UA had more revenue passenger miles than DL.

RPM's:
1. AA
2. UA
3. DL
4. NW
5. CO
6. WN
7. US
8. HP
9. AS
10. TZ

ORD747CLE:

If I am not mistaken. The run down on size still is,

1. AA
2. UA
3. DL
4. NW
5. CO
6. WN
7. US

Both have cut capacity. Delta recently retired its 727s and MD-11s, so that had some effect on capacity. I think United will hold onto the capacity title, but Delta domestically carries more passengers than United. Of course, United has a much larger international network than either Delta or American. Keep in mind that United has many more larger aircraft than Delta. Delta has only a handful of 777s. It has a large fleet of 767s, but overall, UA has many 767s, 747s, and 777s. I guess it depends on whether parked aircraft count as capacity.

I don´t think, that UA´s international network is that much larger than DL´s!

DL for instance is much bigger in Europe with a lot more destinations served and also higher frequencies than UA! (except for London to US market where UA definetley has a strong hold)

On the other side, there is UA, with its huge Asian network, where DL (now) is almost non-existent (except the daily ATL-AA), Japan">NRT-ATL flight) and a bigger South American network than DL!
But the two international networks compared, I would guess they are about the same size!
Of course it´s true that UA has a lot more bigger aircraft in service (763, 777, 744) but DL with its 777 and 763 serves almost all (for a few exeptions) international destinations daily and its keymarkets also with more than one flight a day!

But one thing is undisputed, DL serves more passengers than UA!
Before 9/11 and the TWA takeover it even served a lot more passengers than AA! Over 110 million!!! What a number!!!
In Europe DL is definetley better known and also bigger than any other US airline! Because they were the first american airline beside TWA and Pan Am to serve the European market after deregulation in 1978, and also due to most of the Pan Am assets they took over!
If they would have also bought PA´s rights into LHR back in 1991, instead of UA, than there would be absolutely no doubt on the bigger international network  Big grin

I just hope that UA is not going to ruin its reputation in LHR and also that both carriers will emerge into a bright future, stronger and bigger than ever before!
Of course DL is faring a bit better than both of its larger competitors, but I wish UA and also AA nothing but the best!
Though I´m a rabid DL fan, I don´t wanna see any of the 3 majors disappear!

In fact I don´t wanna see any US carrier disappear!!!

Best regards,

I think you need to consider the annual revenue as the primary measure of size; that's what Wall Street would do. But RPM's really represent what an airline produces.

Guys,

Either buy a subscription to or get your hands on an issue of ATW (Air Transport World)...

The statistics are there on the front page every month!

When I think of bigness, I think also of fleet size. How many aircraft does DL operate? How many does United operate?

Is UA really larger than DL? For the last years, I remember DL always being number 2 in fleet size!

They used to be number 1 in passengers enplaned, number 2 in fleet size, and number 3 in RPM´s!
However AA was number 1 in fleet size and UA was number 1 in RPM`s!

This was the last information I had!
