Airline Personnel Ever Do Something Extremely Rude

Sun Jan 04, 2004 12:45 am

Everyone has their own airline horror story. But what about the crew members of the airline? Have they ever done something so barbaric to you such as yelling, chasing you up and down the aisle, etc? If so, please share...

Once while I was making a cup of Coffee in a galley before departure. This man from Upper class pocked his head around the bulkhead and asked if he could have "a coffee, black, two sugars". I smiled and said I would request for one of the F/As to attend to his request as soon as they could (it was easy to spot that I was not a F/A as I was in full uniform, which was not red!).

He then said "but I am asking you lady"

I said that I was unable to serve passengers as (trying to make him laugh by saying) they have better coffee then the flight deck crew do, and they F/A's lock it away so I cant get to it.

He then sat back down. I went to walk back into the FD when he shouted "I asked you for a coffee". I then closed the FD door (locking it) and he then started to knock on the door. We could hear him saying I want a cup of coffee!

Needless to say the Captain called the Purser to the front galley to deal with the issue.

I did now know coffee was so addictive  Big grin

There are many stories about passengers going a little crazy.

I've seen many more rude passengers than airline employees in the air. On the ground I have one incident that still sticks in my mind. At Dorval Airport in Montreal I witnessed an Air Canada agent literally yelling at an Asian family trying to get them to understand the young daughter had left a bag unattended only 6 or 7 meters away by the terminal window. She got so loud people in the check in line started to turn around to see what was going on. She didn't quite get the concept that talking louder in English and French really doesn't help much if you speak only Mandarin or Cantonese.... She embarassed us all and I made that comment to my check in clerk when I got to the counter. I'll bet those people never fly Air Canada again and probably went home with a bad taste in their mouths about Montreal and Montrealers.

LOL,

Oh, Recently how that Virgin captain was a weenie bit intoxicated to fly the 744 out of Dulles. If I were the passenger, I would consider that a rude behavoir. I'm not picking on Virgin Atlantic and I have nothing against them or their pilots, but keep up the great job. It also goes with the same with pilots on different carriers. As a passenger, I've never seen such rude things from flight crews 'cept for their professionalism. But when flying on United, the f/a's were serving beverages, so they served my father a coke without ice. He asked them politly for ice in his drink but they said "We ran out of ice." For crying out loud, it was an A320. How can they be out of ice if they could only hold like 150 passengers.

Happy Flying.

It's not all that unusual to be completely out of ice. Especially on AB equipment. I don't know how UA arranged the galleys on their ABs, but US didn't appear to give much thought to it.

I don't doubt but what that UA flight was out of ice. There just isn't a lot of galley room on those things. To make matters worse, some airlines are trying to double cater certain flights for the turnaround. For example, a flight that operates CLT-ORF-CLT will be catered in CLT only. If the equipment is a 733/4 (which is usually is) this is not a problem. You'll have stuff left when you get back to CLT -- there's tons of room in the galleys for all kinds of supplies. If a 320 is substituted, there won't be enough stuff for two. There may not be enough stuff for one depending on how many people ask for a whole can.

Sooooooooooo.......the F/A wasn't being mean or rude or lazy. The flight was just out of ice.  Sad

Im still insisting on the "coat hanger incident" whereby an F/A on UAL shoved one under the noses of three people by the windows on a 777 in order to close the shades one of the rudest things I have ever seen. No "sorry, could you lower your shade (and explain why)" a la VS, or "excuse me" even, just shoved it past people. Was really weird to see this thing sneaking past you. She also threw something at my then-bf- an apple I think. That woman was nasty- ill never fly UAL again i swear.

One other one- I was moving back to Las Vegas from London and had almost everything I owned in the world in one big bike box and a huge suitcase- I knew I was going to be overweight in LAX at my stopover, so I called HP before I left London to check the cost to make sure I had the money. They said at reservations it would b $50 per overweight case, and the website confirmed this. I get to LAX and the guy told me it was going to be $75. I bitched loudly ( i was emotional and tired by this point) and said I had just checked two other sources, so what the hell was he on about. He relented way too easily- almost in a "i was only joking" way, which really ticked me off. This was back in 2000 though when HP apparently was having problems. I still fly them today, however, and always have an excellent experience on them!  Smile

In 1959, my parents were refused boarding on a Sabena flight because they were not white. Since Sabena was the only flight to that destination for several days, they agreed to fly my parents and my older brother (I was not yet born) but they were at the back row of the plane and screened from other passengers.

So my family never flew on Sabena ever again after this. Nothing against Belgium or Belgians, only Sabena.

While mine's nothing as bad as Obi's I still had a rather nasty experience with a UA gate agent at IAD two years ago. I and five other people who work with the same nonprofit as I do were flying LGA-IAD-CAE. The LGA-IAD leg came off alright, but when we got to IAD, we found our flight to CAE had been cancelled due to weather.

We got in line to see if we could be moved over to another flight and encountered the rudest gate agent I've EVER come across. She began by snapping at me to come up to the desk. As I calmly and politely explained that I'd appreciate it if she could rebook me another flight to CAE. In return I got "Are you stupid or just ignorant? That was the last flight to Columbia." Hmm...pardon me for not having UA's entire timetable memorized. I then inquired if she could book me onto another airline's flight to CAE. I got in response "No. I'm sick and tired of you kids who think I owe you anything. You don't pay my salary, I don't owe you anything." Mind you I was a 19 year old college sophomore at the time. As I continued she sneered at me and shouted "I don't have time to deal with you anymore. Next!" After talking to someone more senior than her we all got rebooked on a US IAD-CLT-CAE flight and given vouchers to make up for her rudeness...it still stands out in my mind as one of the prime reasons why you'll never catch me on a UA flight ever again.

Garnetpalmetto,

Did you ever report her?

Here's my experience with a ticket agent for US Airways in San Diego.

The lady who checked us in was very polite, friendly, and professional. She then told us that we'd have to go with a skycap as he would put our suitcases through the bomb machine, and we'd have to be there with him. We had several cameras in one of the suitcases, and they all had film in them. After the suitcases were run through the machine, we then figured that the film would be ruined. We asked the skycap if he knew for sure whether or not it would be ruined, but he wasn't sure. So he asked the security guy operating the machine, and he said it most likely would be ruined.

My wife and I were a bit upset that we hadn't been warned about this previously, but it wasn't US Airways' fault. It was all done by the TSA. So we decided to see if US Airways could do anything about it - not that we expected that US Airways would give us anything due to the inconvenience. We got back in line at the counter, and then we were called over to the next agent - bald, short and plump little man. We asked him if anything could be done, and he said "It's common sense not to put film in your suitcase." Then he shooed us away.

If it's common sense, then how come the SKYCAP - an airport employee - didn't know for sure if the film would be ruined or not?

I haven't flown with US Airways since that's happened, but I still have had very good experiences on the airline.

Obithomas: That was such a degrading thing to happen. Did Sabena have some sort of racist policy on their books? I guess that was the sad reality back then. Good for them for dumping SN.

Years ago on a TWA flight I was on business from JFK -SFO and the TWA F/A's were in the back of airplane, all of them & they were chit-chatting very loud. I introduced myself to them and asked them if they would keep the noise down, one of the gals rudely replied that she was on a break and she could do what she wants. Once again, very nicely I told them that the company that I workd for had business ties with TWA & that I knew and was personal friends with the schedulers of the F/A's and also knew the Vice President of Flight Ops & several other senior people. Of course she did not believe me so I told her the names and lets just say that I had free drinks for the rest of the flight.

On United Airlines the ticket agent would not give me the emergency exit seat, she said that I had to call United Reservations
to request it, this was during the United Summer of Hell time. Not only did I get the emergency exit seat but I also received a letter at home for "2" $200 credit vouchers for my next United flight & a letter of apology.

On PanAm, they lost my luggage & then told me that they have no idea as to how long it will take to find my seabag (I was in the Navy).

American Airlines, one of the F/A's told me that if I was a man, that I should give up my window seat and switch with a couple, who were travelling on passes, so that they could sit together, the answer was NO and went back to sleep.

I'm not sure, sorry. Of all the European airlines my parents flew, and they flew a lot of them, this was the only such incident.

I'm quite sure that the Sabena that went out of business a few years ago was completely different from the Sabena that refused my parents to board. Times change, people change, usually for the better!

Palmetto.......I hope you did report her! That is just absolutely stupid that she would treat a customer that way.....especially if the customer didn't do anything to piss her off.

But I actually would have had some fun had I been you.....especially when she said "you don't pay my salary".....I would have snapped my fingers right back at her and said "Um...where do you think the money for your salary comes from? Money Trees at the end of runway?"

As far as bad airline personnel i've dealt with..........I didn't really appreciate being questioned on why I was going to the bathroom by a Flight Attendant on a US Airways flight from SFO to CLT, come to think of it she questioned just about everything I did the whole flight, and got an attitute with me when I switched seats even though it was nearly an empty flight or asking her for something to drink.
But i've had much worse experiences than that at retail stores.....namely the BestBuy in Gastonia, North Carolina

PiedmontGirl.......was the A320 family the last aircraft you flew on before you retired at US Airways? Just curious because I know a US Airways pilot on the A320 family based out of CLT, I was wondering if you might know him. If you dont mind, could you send me an e-mail if you get a minute?  Smile

Ever think that the flight attendant in question was alarmed by the fact that you changed seats... Maybe it was something you were wearing, about your demeanor, etc... She may have been a bi%*#, but then again, maybe she/he was doing their job, by watching for unusual behavior in the cabin... Food for thought...

AA777MIA.......that is true, and I do apologize for making that statement, perhaps she was just doing her job.....but I do think it was a little rude to ask someone why they are going to the bathroom.....ummm....do I really need to explain that?  Sad
And getting an attitude with me because I asked her for a coke while she was serving drinks really irritated me.....
The fact is that I didn't appreciate her attitude towards me during the flight, and trust me i'm not a very demanding passenger when I fly.

Oh well.....the other two FA's on board that flight were very professional  Smile.

Midnight Mike,

While I agree that the F/A who said you weren't a real man was rude and probably could have phrased it better, it really would have been the nice/right thing to do to let a couple sit together, especially if you were sleeping and weren't looking out the window in the first place. Also, I find people who throw around who they are and that they know people usually are just bluffing and are generally being @$$es. My uncle is one of those people and I find that behavior obnoxious. I just reccomend that you try being nicer to people, even if you are faced with a difficult situation and rude people.

I was riding in the front cabin of a US carrier one night and there were no F/A's to be found and there were lots of call buttons on for along time, repeatedly being chimed. Everyone in 1st got to talking and then hit their buttons (jokingly) hit their call buttons and waited... still nothing.

I took everyone's (well about 10 people) drink order and went up there and said, "Sorry to bother you ladies, but if you'll show me the frig I'll tend bar for the front!" Well, that was not well received. I saw they were all crowded around a girl with a big engagement ring and a bridal magazine and I knew I was in big trouble -- in the ground or in the air a guy disturbing wedding talk is in the dog house. They ushered me back to my seat and began taking drink orders (not using my list I had so meticulously prepared for them). I asked for a Ginger Ale, which came some time later.

The one who delivered my Ginger Ale was smiling and two others were watching on from the galley with great interest... too much interest. I got the impression they had a good sense of humor too and I said, "Thanks, but I'll take my in a can... an unopened can!" She looked very dissapointed!

Well, I think they did something nasty but I thought it was funny and don't fault them for that. We passengers had been a little naughty too and turn-about is fair play!

Well, not rude really, but I have had experiences with over-friendly FA’s in the past.

On one particular flight some years back, myself and a colleague were upgraded. There were 2 FA’s assigned to our cabin which was half empty. We were the only youngsters in the biz-cabin which otherwise looked like a geriatric ward. One of the FA’s made casual conversation at first which increasingly got personal (including questions like whether “we were together” meaning dating. We were, but that was none of her business!) . After the meal service she actually took the empty seat on the row behind us and started chatting up my colleague and even tried chatting up with me! Whats more that evening she even landed up at the hotel where we were staying (they had swapped nos) and spent the rest of the evening with us! Talk about a chipku! I knew that Tam-Brahms are talkative, but this one had a JT9D attached to her tongue!

Rude FA’s are bad, but so are the chatty types!

I do however, agree with you that aisle talk should not be the entire flight. Nor, should it be in the seat next to the passenger. However, some of the blame here could have been with your friend. Are they still together? They both could have met the love of their life? When you meet the "one" sometimes ethics and common sense go out the door.
