FedEx ATR-42

Sun Jan 04, 2004 10:21 am

Quite some time ago FedEx purchased 8 ATR-42 aircraft from Continental Express, to be converted to freighters. Has anyone seen one yet?

As a matter of fact, I just saw three that were at the Empire Airlines hangar in Spokane,WA yesterday. Two were outside in old CO Express scheme, and one in the hangar, except for the tail.
Empire Airlines is on of the FedEx Feeder companies based in Coeur d' Alene,Idaho.
Funny you should ask that question when I was wondering yesterday about "did FedEx get Atrs?"
I guess we both win in this.

Did Fedex order those funny looking planes also. I thought they would be in service already.

Expect to see a lot of ATR's running freight.

Those Fokker 27's are getting old.

I think one might make it's way up to Alaska to replace the F-27 that is here now.

NAC already has the ATR in service to replace their DC-6's.

Frankly I think that is a net loss for aviation.

The FedEx Fokker freight dogs in and out of IND use a different call sign and I can never catch it on the scanner. What is the call sign and are they a different freight company contracting with FedEx?

The FedEx F27s are operated by Empire Airlines (callsign Empire Air) and Mountain Air Cargo (callsign Mountain).
