Back in '92, they built taxi way "S" at ONT (Ontario, CA), the whole length of the runways. Took about 10 months.

Runway Website With Answers!

Manchester got permission for the second runway in January 1997. Work started on the 10000ft runway in May 1997, but environmental protestors held things up. Completion date was May 2000, this has now slipped until at least August, due to the British winters!

This runway has it's own website. I suggest you spend some time there. I has lots of photos and details of the runway's construction plus lots of other stuff, the diversion of a road and river, a new firestation and dealing with all the extra rain runoff water.

If you're interested in runway building - Visit this site.
Plus Manchester's 24L/06R must be the only runway in the world with it's own website!

Don't forget to factor in the NIMBY's and lawsuits which extend time and cost. And then it usually gets built anyway!

Re: Runway Extension At MSY

In July of 1988, we began what ended up to be a 1200' foot extension of MSY runway 10-28. It was completed late 90/early 91. Of course, the problem we have is a high water table, the ground underneath is almost like a sponge.

The moral of the story here is, the complexities involved in building a runway over a certain type of land can dictate how long it takes to build that runway.

Referece the above post regarding the newer runway at ONT.
