America West IFE Question? What Happened?

Sun Jan 04, 2004 4:47 pm

I recently took a flight on America West for the first time in about five years, and while comparing those flights I remembered that the flight five years ago had personal IFE, and the current did not (Both flights were 320's). So I got to wondering if this was this a figment of my imagination. Than I checked the photo database and found this pic with the personal IFE disabled. So now I'm wondering why America West did away with this. Does anybody know why?

HP used to have personal IFE. However, I rememebr it being not anyting that special and really expensive at that.

In order to access any of the services provided you had to swipe your credit card, and charges were on a by minute basis.

I lfew an HP flight about 5 years ago and the screens were still installed on our 733, but they were turned off and not working. When I inquired to an FA, she told me that the company that providedd the service had gone out of business.

Sounds like AA & the GTE Airfone flop on domestic flights.

I remember the screeens from 4 HP flights back in summer of 2000. Really got me mad as I thought they were operational at the time. I found out on my 3rd flight from a flight attendant that they weren't.

While I do not know much about the old system, America West is considering putting a new IFE system on their airplanes.

I do remember this system, as my brother's company in L.A. was hired to promote the system on America West, back in the early 90's actually. The system was called FlightLink, and was installed in every seat of America West a/c. My brother's company was hired, they had 50 employees flying around on HP a/c every day, and the employees would get up during the flight, and introduce the system to pax. I loved it, a lot of things were free on the system, your flight map was free, so you could watch your flight the entire trip, the best part of the system, was that, it would show your arrival time into, let's say PHX, it would show your arrival gate, and then, you could scroll through a page of connections, pick your connection, it would then tell you your connecting gate, and then an image would pop up showing you your walk from your arrival gate, to your connecting gate. All before you even landed in PHX, it was awesome. This service was free, but not used enough, because as mentioned, most people thought you had to swipe your card to get into the systme. This was, if anybody remembers, also back in the day that America West use to have movies on their 737-300 a/c.

I remember when HP had video equipped 737s. Looked just like the 757 set up w/ like 4 monitors located in the cieling throughout the cabin. They even took ads out in their inflight magazine to advertise this. Too bad they removed the video monitors....

As for Flight link, just to add, CO also bought a contract for these things and began installing them on refurbished 727s and DC-9s and maybe other types as well.

When I was at HP the management always said the reason for the personal IFE going away was due to the company that installed and operated the system went out of bussiness. This info is still in a DRS page some place for those who work at HP. I just dont remember where.
