Flying Within Central America

Sun Jan 04, 2004 6:48 pm

Hi all,
this summer, I want to fly from Germany to central-america: We want to start in Panama City, then fly to Costa Rica, El Salvador and perhaps Belize. Fine woul be a stopover in the Unites States on the way to Panama or back.
Anybody have information wich airline have the best network in central america? (I suppose Grupo Taca? And what about COPA?). Which United States carrier have the best network from and to central America (and the best offers for a stopover in the States). Which airline have the best offers in flying within central America?
I would welcome any information,
Thank you very much

Hi Md11,

United States carriers which offer the most frequent service to Central American countries are AA and CO. AA flies from MIA and CO from Houston. I am pretty sure they have daily flights to all central american countries. If you want to start in Panama, then i would recommend COPA, i ve heard good things about them. Other than COPA, there is also Grupo Taca which has a full network of destinations in Central/South America from North American (New York, SF, New Orleans and others).
If you do no want a stop over in the US, i am pretty sure (at least they used to) KLM flew to San Jose with a stop in Curacao, but that would mean starting off in Costa Rica.
Also Iberia flies to MIA where it has a feeder to most central american countries.
Within Central America, you could also chose to fly Atlantic Airlines, a Nicaraguan based carrier that offers services to many CA destinations and are a lot cheaper than Grupo Taca.
Have a great time!!

I flew with CO twice to Central America:

First Time: CDG-EWR-SJO (Costa Rica)-EWR-CDG

Second Time: CDG-IAH-BZE (Belize)
GUA (Guatemala City)-IAH-CDG

Continental has the best offers in flying within Central America. The service is very good, the food is OK, for me it's the best North American Airline.

In Central America, fly to Panama city, take a plane to San Jose (Costa Rica)with COPA or TACA. From San Jose, visit Costa Rica (volcanoes + Pacific Coast), take a bus to Nicaragua (Granada) + Lake Nicaragua and then Managua. Take TACA from MGA to GUATEMALA CITY, visit Guatemala (Antigua), go to Copan Ruinas in Honduras by bus, take a bus to Tikal Ruins and then take a bus to Belize. Go to Caye Caulker and San Pedro + Plasencia. Then take a plane from Belize City to IAH with CO and go back to Germany !!

You might find a cheapest fare with LH.... from Germany....

Fly LH498 or LH496 from FRA to Mexico City..... avoid the US (you'll have a lot of inspections in security points....) then take a flight from Mexicana to Panama City and from there you can fly with either Copa or Taca! It's really easy to fly in the region!

I fly to Belize often, from Houston, and prefer Continental to TACA. But if price is a factor and you find a better deal on TACA take it ,as it is not a very long flight.

Within Belize Tropic Air, and Maya Island air fly around Belize (and to Tikal Guatemala). They both have websites. Also if you take a bus/cab to the City's muni airport (from Goldson Int'l) you can often get cheaper flights.

MD-11,

My experiences with COPA have been good, brand new 73Ws and 73Hs, Panama has a small, nice airport, easy for connections. TACA is nice.

From Europe to Central America, besides what has already been mentioned, you may fly BW from FRA to POS , JM to KIN, BA to SJU and a few other islands , AF to PTP and SXM.

A very nice destination in the Caribbean is Cuba. Havana is only a 40 min. hop from Cancun and definitely worth the trip, just avoid CU by all means.
