Final AirTran DC9 Flight Tomorrow

Mon Jan 05, 2004 7:28 am

Well, looks as if the old girl finally is going to kick the can. Tomorrow will be the final flight of an AirTran DC9.....MCO-ATL as flight 744. Anybody going to be on it? Hopefully I can get some good photos.

Justin

Ship 949 will be it.....

Is this aircraft going to go into the NWA fleet. Just joking but still a sad sight to see it being retired.

Good riddance -- I think FL stopped cleaning/making cosmetic repairs to these planes once their demise was announced. EAch of my FL DC9 trips included dirty and broken trays, tiny overhead bins, and grimy seats.

Now, their 717s are just great!

Is this really the final AirTran DC9 flight........or are DC9s still "ön duty" as spare aircraft at AirTran for the next few weeks?

This should be the end. Ship 949 is the only one left and is about due for a C-check, I imagine. Also, the remaining DC-9 pilots are scheduled for 717 school starting this week.

Personally I'll be glad to see them gone. My last flight was on one a little over a year ago, I actually picked that flight because it was a DC9 and I hadn't flown on one in awhile (once on board I realized why I avoided this plane haha).

Here Here Justin, Although the FL DC9 was my first plane for my first flight, it was still a huge headache causer. I was going to be on the last flight, but decided against it because I didn't want to go all that way. Oh well, $200 extra for me.

If it makes it in on time in ATL at 3pm and if my flight is delayed tomorrow (as I've noticed it usually is over the last week), then I may be able to see it from my flight to MCO on Delta 909. I may see it land tomorrow as our flight is taking off. I've never been on a DC-9 but I may get on one with NWA one day. Goodbye FL DC-9's!

DLX737200: you've never been on a dc-9 flight? yikes, either you're really young or i'm getting old. that or you haven't flown very much. but no worries, you still have plenty of time to fly a northwest dc-9. may i suggest one of their earliest models, a dc-9-10? i think you can actually feel the nearly 40-year-old metal skin stretching and contracting.

" I know what NW is thinking:

LMAO! " NW is heading to Atlanta for a yard sale this week! "

" yikes, either you're really young or i'm getting old. that or you haven't flown very much. but no worries, you still have plenty of time to fly a northwest dc-9. "

Hey i havent been on a DC-9 yet either  Big grin Oh... and i live in Eastern Michigan ( Shocker! ) LOL. Well, i've been on an MD-82 American Airlines before, Fokker 100 American Airlines, and a NWA Boeing 727-200 so... those are pretty similar, but never a pure DC-9 bird ( I know the MD-82 comes very close ). As long as i've been in Michigan ( 5 Years ) i have yet to fly NWA ( I usually avoid them, usually fly with Continental, their partner ), but i'd like to soon to try them out again. Last time i flew with them was early 1998 on that 727 on TPA-DTW and DTW-TPA ( Then i moved to Michigan a couple months later ).
Flying a plane is no diff. from riding a bicycle. Its just a lot harder to put baseball cards in the spokes. -'Airplane'

This is THE final flight. It will not sit around as a spare. As was mentioned it is due for a C-Check shortly and we don't want to pay for that when we're just dumping it anyways.

Right now the flight is delayed because ATL is on flow control.

Despite the delay, the flight was pretty good. Shame on MCO for not even saying a word about it, or giving it a water salute  Sad

I'll have a trip report up soon along with pics from the plane (cockpit, cabin etc etc)

Justin, Tad Hutcheson told me there would be no special water salutes.  Sad I guess a water salute still wouldn't have washed all of the $hi* off of that plane, so why bother? Now FL is pure 717. I sure will miss seeing the variety of ATL for a few months.

Too bad the weather SUCKED at ATL yesterday. I didn't see it land but I could barely see across the airport anyway. Those clouds were low and filled with turbulence yesterday. I was just glad when I was out of ATL and in Florida again.
