Hungry Aircraft Toilets

Mon Jan 05, 2004 4:13 pm

Okay, this is a weird one but it caught my attention. I'm watching a show on the Discovery Channel right now called Mythbusters. They're trying to prove or disprove an urban legend that an obese woman on board a 767 flushed the toilet while still sitting down and became stuck. Apparently she remained there until flight crew members could pry her out. Just to keep my credibility please keep in mind I said this was just an urban legend. Has anyone heard this tale or something similar?

The 767's flushing mechanism is really cool. No water, just S-U-C-K--->GONE!

I've seen that exact show, and I recall that they came remarkably close to creating the necessary "seal" based on their experiments. It's one of the more entertaining episodes since, unlike most of what they take on, it appeared as though this particular urban legend is legitimate and/or reasonable certainly by comparison.

However, a website that I personally trust to debunk various urban legends and email forwards went to great lengths to research the particular story, which was found to be categorically false. Who knows?!?

There is a big difference between the elements of an urban legend being possible and the actual fact of the supposed occurence of the event. Just like the Darwin Awards, which has two or more competing web sites, one that requires verifiable stories and one that publishes just about any submission.

I've seen that episode.

The fact that struck me is that one of those toilets costs $20,000!

There's a funny sequence.

Guy 1, holding up toilet: "They build these things to aviation grade. Just look at these welds."
Guy 2: " oh wow! yah!"

I become more and more convinced that people strictly read the very last post of a thread before replying...sigh.

Please feel free to tell me if you've heard the same. I recall hearing that a little boy suffered considerable injuries to his genitals by flushing an airc toilet while sitting on it.

LOL, the version of this airborne urban legend I heard was that the woman pax not only had her ass stuck in the toilet, but that the suction had sucked out her intestines. LOL....euhh.

I know plenty of people who tell me they will ensure they are standing up before they flush an aircraft toilet..........including me.

There have always been urbans legends about aircraft toilets. Some people think that when you flush them that the waste goes out the bottom of the plane. This is because train toilets did dump the waste on the tracks.

As far as I know no one has ever gotten stuck to a toilet seat. As far as I know, no one has ever been injured as the result of a flushing mechanism on an aircraft toilet.

"hungry toilet threads"
