Lav Use With No Shoes...?

Mon Jan 05, 2004 10:48 pm

OK, I've just been reading through a rather lengthy topic here and I noticed something crop up a couple of times...

Apparently going to a lav with no shoes on is considered a terrible sin. Is this view commonly held and if so why?

All I know is, on a long haul flight my feet swell so wearing shoes is very uncomfortable. Therefore I often make my way to the lav (especially if I'm in an exit row seat and the loo's are only a few feet away) with just socks on my feet.

I don't think anyone feels it is a 'sin', more that it is just kinda gross. Despite the cabin crew's best efforts sometimes the floors of the lavatories can become damp with various mysterious fluids. As a flight attendant I often caution people who are about to enter the lavatory in their stocking feet or barefoot. Not because I disapprove, but because I worry that it is unsanitary.

It is in NO way a sin. But why would you want to step in someone's urine and other things? Some people are from countries and have no idea what the lav is or how to use it. I am not trying to degrade anyone. But that is just the fact of life. It is just not sanitary. Or do you disagree?

I have to agree with SWAFA30. I recently flew FRA-DTW and on that flight I think I was traveling with a bunch of pigs. The restrooms became littered with wet paper towels and water or ? all over the place. No way I was going in there in my socks. If I go in the restroom, I try to leave it as clean as I found it but I'm not cleaning up after someone else!

I totally agree with You Flyguyclt. By the way, in Italy it's considered not so 'polite' to walk without shoes while in the nothern Europe it's something usual on plane. I simply respect them and their wish, but i find to be a little 'dirty' to walk on a plane without shoes, and not only in the toilette.

I agree with FlyGuy and SWA30. It's not a sin at all. However, there is no way to know just what the liquid on the floor is.

No matter how hard the F/As try, there is the possibility of urine and other liquids being on the floor of an aircraft lav. It's not wrong. It's just not sanitary.

May I suggest purchasing a pair of soft stretchy house slippers with rubber soles from a discount house and wearing them to go to the lav. I wouldn't go in there in my stocking feet. Just wouldn't.

Also, sometimes things break on the airplane. And while flight attendants do their very best to clean it all up. We may miss a small piece of glass now and then. Without sounding cliche. It is for your "utmost safety" to have shoes on while walking around the cabin. But don't worry all. It probably will not be an F.A.A. directive to have shoes on. So walk as you wish  Smile

It's just gross. People piss all over the lavatory floor. And too often they crap on the floor too. And it never gets more that a cursory cleaning. At overhall the corrosion under the lavs speaks volumes. So if you want to go to the lav with no socks thats up to you. But if I see you, I'll be thinking that your one sick monkey. How hard is it to put on your shoes?

SWAFA30, Flyguy, PiedmontGirl---

Are you saying that, in addition to all of the responsibilities that you have, you are also expected to be a janitor?? If someone becomes ill and vomits all over a lavatory, is it your job to go in there and clean that mess up? Please tell me that the answer is no.

We do cursory clean up of the lavs. We do things such as wiping off sinks and such. When the floor gets really nasty, I would take a bunch of paper towels, drop them on the floor and use my foot to move them around and get as much stuff up as possible. I would use one trash bag as a glove to pick up the towels to drop them into another trash bag.

When the lavs get to gross for words -- people have vomited all over the place or defecated on the floor, in the sink, or on the toilet lid -- the lav is locked off and someone on the ground who has the equipment to do this sort of cleaning comes and takes care of it.

As MD88Captain pointed out, the corrosion of the lavatory floors is tremendous.

I'm a hygiene freak! I wouldn't even think of entering an airplane toilet without shoes on, If there was liquid on the floor, and I had shoes on I probably still wouldn't go in there, as I would end up stepping in it and then spreading it around the rest of the aircraft when I walk back to my seat! Urgh, some people!

Yes, it's disgusting to go in there without shoes. When the aircraft reaches cruising altitude, I take my shoes off, too. But to go to the lavatory, I slip them on. It only takes a couple of extra seconds.

By the way, why do some people take off their shoes before take off? In an emergency evacuation, wouldn't they rather be wearing shoes?

I suppose they are used to taking their shoes off as soon as they sit down, although I wonder if they do this at work.  Smile

Yes, it would be much better to have shoes on in an emergency. Without them, a person would be likely to have to step barefoot into a smouldering something or onto a piece of sharp metal.

One answer could be - "if you are in a movie theatre, would you go to the lav/public restroom in your socks?"  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

An airplane lav IS a public restroom, the only difference being the low humidity, which means that "spills" or bad aim can dry out quickly - but you are still stepping on it!

LOL  Laugh out loud People have great tendencies to forget that an airplane lav is a public restroom -- it's very tiny and is designed for one customer at a time -- but it's a public bathroom.

No one would go to the bathroom in a restaurant in his socks either. Nor would he go in a bar, amusement park, or sports stadium.

It amazes me that people use airplane lavs in their bare or stocking feet. Ick!!

No!!!
I wouldn"t think about leaving my seat without my shoes. That's why I always choose nice confy shoes to travel with, so they are easy to put on if my feet swells!!
I do not recommend to anyone to go without a shoes to the lav. That's not safe and it's not hygienic!!

Yes we do "tidy" the aircraft lavs. Some flight attendants do more than others. It just depends on the crew. But we do not break out the mop and sanitizer.
