DFW-GIG-MUC And Back

Tue Jan 06, 2004 10:01 am

I am planning to go to Rio for spring break, and then off to Munich. Any ideas on how to do this in a cost effective manner? Should I get two seperate round trip tickets, one DFW-GIG and one GIG-MUC? A triangle ticket from DFW to GIG to MUC and back to DFW? If possible, I want to fly on CO down to Brazil, since I am elite with them and can upgrade. Any ideas are welcome!
Thanks, and Happy New Year.

Try the following

R/T Ticket-
DFW-MUC Lufthansa (via FRA) or United Airlines (via IAD)

R/T Ticket-
MUC-GIG Lufthansa (N/S) or Varig (via FRA)

One of the keys is to maintain the same airline or partners on the airline! Try looking at Varig, Lufthansa, and United Airlines.

Sounds like a great trip, albeit a logistic challenge. From DFW you can take AA to GRU and probably TAM in between Sao Paulo and Rio, then take TAM or Varig to either Frankfurt or Munich (not sure where these carriers have direct flights to), then take Lufthansa from MUC-FRA-DFW. LHR001 is right, that after you get down to Brazil it would probably be best to take the Star Alliance carriers from Brazil to Germany and back to DFW. Although AA is usually cheaper between Frankfurt and DFW than is Lufthansa.

If I were booking it, it would probably be:

AA DFW-GRU
TAM GRU-GIG
*or AA DFW-MIA-GIG
Varig GIG-FRA
LH FRA-MUC
LH MUC-FRA
AA FRA-DFW (AA 772s have PTVs and wider pitch than the LH A340s on this route, and AA generally offers cheaper tix on this route than does LH.)

I can't wait to see what this is going to cost, no offense. Hope this helps a bit.

A cheaper option for you may be to use a Round the World ticket, such as the oneworld Explorer fare. You have to go round the world in the same direction however. So a sample itinerary could be:

Dallas-Rio de Janeiro AA (via Miami)
Rio de Janeiro-Munich BA (via London)
Munich-Tokyo BA (via London)
Tokyo-Dallas AA

So a little more flying, but probably cheaper! (sorry dont have the exact fares to hand). Star Alliance has a similar product.

Happy Planning!!

Cheers  Smile

Agree w/ Britair.

Much more fun, too  Wink/being sarcastic. Don't know about RTW prices if purchased in the US, but a OneworldExplorer / StarAlliance RTW ticket purchased in Germany runs around EUR 2,000 / USD 2,500. Check w/ BA in the US, they should have a dedicated RTW department who can help you out. Minimum stay on both Oneworld / Staralliance is 10 days. Not sure if Skyteam offers RTW, maybe they do.

Alternatively, LHR001 is on the money. For fares MUC/GIG return, check out www.opodo.de (orbitz equivalent, run by major European carriers). Ran a quick check, MUC/GIG return for 13Feb 20Feb starts at EUR 1.099 / USD 1.396 incl taxes on LH/Varig via FRA.

In any case, have fun.

Thanks guys! I will certainly keep you all posted as to what I come up with. I will investigate all of the above options and let you all know what the outcome is.
Thanks/Muito Obrigado/Vielen Dank!
