IAD - Washington Union Transit Time (rush Hour)?

Tue Jan 06, 2004 12:45 pm

If I arrive at 5:00PM to IAD, take a taxi to Washington Union, will I be able to make a 7:10PM train? If so, what kind of cost am I looking at?

Hmmm.

Last time I had to take an taxi to DCA (across the river from Washington DC) from IAD to get my parked car because some citizen wouldn't keep his seat during the last 30 minutes of flight, and the Washington National-bound plane landed at Dulles instead, it cost me $45. That time of day, $45-$55 seems about right to Union station also.

I live in the District and fly out of Dulles a couple of times a month. Do not, at any cost, get on the freeways during rush hours (4 pm to 7 pm). If something can go wrong, it will go wrong. There will be a traffic delay. I guarantee it. The DC region has some of the worst traffic in the country.

Best travel from Dulles to Union Station: Take the Washington Flyer airport bus non stop to the West Falls Church Metro Station, $8.00 one way and leaving every 20 minutes or so and takes about 20 minutes. From West Falls Church Metro, take the Orange line to Metro Center, transfer to the Red Line to Union Station. The Metro ride should be about 35 to 40 minutes and should cost around $3.00.

Frankly, I doubt you'll make your train regardless so make sure you have a back up plan

I have to differ on taking the flyer over the Metro bus... the metro bus is not only cheaper but more predictable then the flyer bus I have had bad experiences with the flyer bus but the Metro provided bus was ALWAYS on schedule and it takes you straight into the district rather then w-falls church

Now an even more convienent option... Take the Metro bus into L'enfant then a cab over to union station... wtih the cab zones it should not be that much...

Hi,
Assuming you are arriving on a domestic flight, you should have no problem making it to Union station within 1.5 hrs (barring exceptional circunstances). Mass transit (METRO) is your best bet.

Wilcharl....during non-rush hours I might agree. However, look at the time he's traveling. The beltway both directions and 66 east are usually jammed with people heading into home. There are times I've been backed up miles on the transition road from Dulles access to 66 east. Then you get to any of the bridges over the Potomac and they, too, are backed up, especially if there's even a minor accident. Yes, occasionally you'll get lucky and have nice ride, but it's an exception, not a rule. Metro will get you there.

I think 1.5 hours is cutting it close, but the rush hour is the evening rush hour, so Sjc>Sfo will be against traffic in a cab. Dulles Toll Road to 66 East, to 110 past the Pentagon, to 395 North and exit at Union Station. All of this except maybe 110 is against traffic in the evening rush hour.

I think it's doable, but as I said, it's cutting it close.

I-66 stinks in both directions during rush hour. By the time you land, get in the lunar rover, get your bags and so on it could be 20+ minutes spent right there.

I would definitely try and get a back up plan. That is cutting it way too close. If possible, I would get an earlier flight (2 hours or so) or a later train.

Good luck.
