Crew Rest Inflight

On a long haul flight, there is a 2nd crew to relieve the first crew when they hit duty time limit. But.... what does the 2nd crew do in the first half of the flight? sleep? do they go right to the Crew Rest Quarters when boarding? And what do they do up there?

When you come "on duty" you should be fully rested as if starting your workday. But for these guys, they have to sit on the plane for several hours before they are put to work. Seems to me that I'd be tired even before reporting to the flight deck for work.

Is there a second crew on a transatlantic flight. Let's say from CDG to IAD.

or just the classic team (captain and F/O).

I don't know much but i think for some airlines there are what they call cruise pilots...they come in mid flight and relieve the Captain or F/O? so that leaves time for either to rest?

At DAL flights over 8 hrs require a 3rd pilot. Although some airlines employ cruise pilots who can only sit in the seat above certain altitudes (approx 20000'), DAL flys an all type-rated crew on those international flights. Usually each pilot takes 1 of 3 rest breaks during the flight.

For flights over 12 hours, there are four pilots. 2 type-rated FO's and 2 Captains. One of the Captains is in charge and the other serves as a member of the crew. Typically at DAL the flight would be broken up into 4 breaks with the 2 crews alternateing rest periods. i.e. a 14 flight may be broken into four 3 hour rest breaks. The reserve crew goes on break about an hour after takeoff, then 3 hours later they jump in the seat and the first crew goes on break, and so on until about an hour before landing.

Ok, so they are alternating. Do the "off" pilots then go and take a nap, catch some sleep, or just hang out watch a movie & stuff in the crew rest cabin?

The off duty pilots do whatever the want. Eat, sleep, read.

At NWA flights over 10 hours have an extra "captain". So on the -400 there will be 3 that will rotate from flying and resting. On the -200 there are 4 of them and the same. On their breaks they are sleeping, reading, watching a movie.

I noticed 3 pilots getting on the A330 at DTW for my flight to FRA. I was thinking to myself that they must be training new pilots for the 330. Never really dawned on me that the return flight is more than 8 hours and that the pilot would reach his duty time before arriving DTW.

Hmmm somthing to think about DTW...wonder why there was not a 4th then on the DC10 coming from FRA. Maybe he was deadheading or training as you said.

With the DC-10 being a three man cockpit, crews were allowed under FAA regs to operate for up to 12 hours on an international sector, though still only 8 hours on domestic sectors.

The A330 on the other hand is a 2 crew aircraft and so is restricted to 8 hour duty sectors regardless of whether it's on domestic or international duties.
